Apartment Dweller’s Best Friend: When and Why to Use a Dog Walker

Staff Writer · Jul 19, 2010

A dog walker can be an apartment dweller’s best friend when you have one or more dogs living with you at your apartment. The expense is truly worth the investment for many apartment dwellers.

Apartment Complexes and Walkers

Apartment complexes are the ideal location for a dog walker because so many people live in one location and that likely means more dogs to be walked. The dogs who live inside the apartment are even more likely to need exercise than dogs who live in houses with yards, as there’s not a lot of space for apartment dogs to run around. Since apartment dogs are fairly cooped up most of the time, they need a lot of fresh air and exercise.

When to Hire a Walker

If you live in an apartment, chances are you could use a break from walking your dog at least once a week and hiring a dog walker to come by only occasionally isn’t very expensive. However, there are certain apartment dwellers who can benefit from dog walkers more than others. This includes anyone who’s short on time. Your dog needs daily exercise—especially when she lives in an apartment—so if you frequently can’t find time to take her out on a walk, hiring a walker can free up your time and make sure your dog gets the exercise she needs.

Even if you have time to walk her at least once a day, chances are you may not find the time to walk her twice a day. Some dog breeds need twice daily walks and other dogs just appreciate stretching their legs after spending most of the day in an apartment. You can hire a walker for one daily walk and take the dog on a walk yourself later or earlier in the day.

Other apartment dwellers who can benefit from a walker include the elderly and the disabled. Being unable to walk for long periods without difficulty may convince you that owning a dog is impossible because you know that your dog will need to be exercised. However, not owning a pet when you long to own one can be a heartwrenching experience. If you hire a walker, your dog will still be able to get the exercise she needs and can serve as your companion the rest of the time.

Where to Find a Walker

Ask your neighbors if they employ a dog walker, as you may be able to get a discount from the walker if he or she already picks up dogs from your apartment complex. If your neighbors and/or landlord can’t help you, you might try a community bulletin board in the complex or near the complex, as dog walkers will put up advertisements in the areas they hope to attract more customers. If all of those avenues fail, try the Internet or the yellow pages.

The cost of a dog walker differs depending on the area in which you live, the walker’s experience and how many dogs you’d like walked. It doesn’t hurt to “shop around” and get different quotes before you commit to any one walker.
