Apartment Hunting: Four Top Amenities for Young Professionals

Staff Writer · Sep 30, 2010

If you’re apartment hunting, the process can go easier if you determine what you desire in amenities. If you’re a young professional, then your requirements are different than, say, a family with a baby or a couple. With your work schedule, you’ll want amenities that will make your times spent at home relaxing as well as conducive to your professional needs.

#1 – Leisure Activities

Being a young professional, you know how important your leisure time is to you. Therefore, you want to have the types of amenities available that will keep you fit and ready for the next day’s activities. For convenience, look for apartment communities who offer fitness facilities to their tenants. Check out whether or not the apartment has a pool. Some apartments are close to hiking or walking paths while others provide cinder paths for running or jogging.

If you like racquet sports, you may want to consider those communities that offer tennis courts and racquetball facilities for their residents’ use. Of course, you may like nothing more than relaxing in front of the TV after a workday. If that’s the case, then you’ll want to take advantage of the free cable offered by some apartment communities. Some urban communities also offer Internet cafes where you can access the Internet for free. Others provide media libraries where you can borrow DVDs.

#2 – Security and Parking

Naturally, your security matters too. Make sure you select an apartment that has an in-unit security system to safeguard residents from fire or burglary. Intercom keyed entrances are also desirable as well as apartments with gated access. Where you park you car is also of importance. If you’re an urban dweller, choose apartments with access-controlled parking. If you live in the suburbs, make sure the parking lot of any apartment you select is well lit at night and offers covered parking.

# 3 – Furnished Living

If you’re a professional who anticipates that you’ll be transferred in the near future, you’ll probably want to consider a furnished apartment home. If you do select a furnished rental, then you may want to opt for one that has complete housekeeping services to accommodate your busy schedule. Choose apartments that include kitchenware and linens in the price of the rent. Also, apartments that offer maid service are a good choice. Typically, housekeeping services are provided on a daily, weekly or on-call basis.

# 4 – Day-to-Day Conveniences

Again, because of your schedule, you also want amenities that make it easier for you to manage your day-to-day activities. Therefore, select apartments with kitchens that come with such features as a dishwasher, garbage disposal, trash compactor, smooth-top electric range, self-cleaning oven, frost-free refrigerator with ice-maker and microwave.

Such amenities help minimize the stress in your life and make daily living a little less taxing. Also, units with washer and dryer, washer and dryer hookup or that provide availability to laundry facilities 24 hours a day can make it easier as well to stay on track at work.

For any young professional, amenities are an important consideration when it comes to selecting an apartment. Use the above information as a guide in finding the perfect place for you.
