Apartment Interiors: Decorating with Black

Black can tie a color scheme together as well as enhance the textures in apartment interiors. Use it to give your apartment a definitively authoritative and sophisticated feel or a more stabilizing influence.

Use Black with a Variety of Colors

Black is an excellent accent color as it strengthens the look of a home’s decor. Because it adds an extra dimension to any type of styling, you can select from a number of ways to effectively use the color. Black then can be used in traditional or modern furnishings as well as for any wall accessories, lamps, or fabrics.

Paint a wall black for drama but don’t cover a whole area in the color as your goal is to heighten the hues and tints of the other colors and textures in the room. For instance, use black accessories to to play up red brick or gray stonework in a living space. Include the color in modern decors to emphasize materials such as steel or glass.

Black is also an essential color in Art Deco styling. Pair a black leather couch with such accents as red, jade or royal blue coloring. Or, incorporate luxury into your setting by accentuating cherry colored cushions or tan velveteen couches with ebon-patterned throws or black pillows.

Choose Black for Traditionally Styled Furnishings

Black can also be used for traditional furniture that is normally painted in other shades. For instance, choose a black table and chairs instead of the standard white color for country cottage furnishings. Black will add interest to such a decor and emphasize the colors of other items or plants in your room, such as flowers and accessories.

Frame Pictures in Black

Black is great color to use on picture frames. You can really highlight your wall decor or prints by using the shade. Black frames look exceptional on any color of wall, but especially stand out on neutrally colorized walls of taupe or beige.

Use Black Wrought Iron in Your Decor

Black is also well-suited for wrought iron furnishings. Whether your decor is Gothic, somewhat modern or tends toward Victorian or Mission styling, you can use black wrought iron for a number of accessories. For instance, place wrought iron candleholders next to a backdrop of green ivy by a window or on the mantle of a fireplace. Include a wrought iron chandelier in your dining area. Lamps made with wrought iron bases also can enhance the looks of certain decors. Place dark green, leafy plants or ferns on wrought iron plant stands. Combine wrought iron with teak or natural rattan to underscore the beauty of the wood.

Upgrade Your Kitchen Cabinets with Black Hardware

Give kitchen cabinets a facelift by choosing black hardware, such as knobs and pulls, for your cabinets’ drawers and doors. Because black goes well with various colors and varnishes as well as looks good with a variety of faucets, it’s the perfect choice to make if you want to give your kitchen cabinets a whole new look at a minimal cost.

You just can’t go wrong with black. Keep it in your decor for versatility.
