Staff Writer · Feb 21, 2010

There are some differences for city living as opposed to a small town lifestyle. Having an apartment in a large city often means the perk of having a doorman. A doorman’s job is a service, and as with many services, tips are expected. Knowing some universal tip guidelines will ensure a smooth transaction from the first time you meet your new doorman.

Examples of Actions Worth Tipping

Residing  in a building with a doorman, it is not required to tip every time he opens a door for you. Here is a guide for the things he does do.

  • Helps with packages,$4.00
  • Opens the door to help with the elevator, $4.00
  • Hails your cab $3.00
  • Signing for packages, at least $2. Higher tip amounts for larger or breakable packages

While there might be some actions that your doorman takes that aren’t very common. In this case, just use best judgement for you feel is fair.

During the Christmas Holiday Season, a bonus is always an option for your doorman’s service during the past year. Rather you gift cash or a personal gift, the doorman will appreciate the thought. If you know your doorman on somewhat of a personal level, than a gift might be appropriate. If you just know the first name of the doorman, than stick with cash as a tip.

While each person might be inclined to tip different amounts, the above mentioned is a list of recommended tip amounts, each situation might call for a larger or smaller tip. It is always been to give the amount that seems appropriate.
