Well, color my apartment happy. Colors have many psychological strings attached to them – some make us feel happy, some portray an aura of attractiveness and other give off relaxed and mellow vibes. You can give your rooms the atmosphere of your choosing by thoughtfully decorating with certain colors. Read on for some tips on what to color where and why.

Dark Rich Hues

Navy blue and hunter green both give off regal and sophisticated vibes. Either of these shades work well as the main color in a bedroom or a supporting color in a neutrally decorated living room (grey is a good compliment). The rooms will be satisfying and relaxing to come home to. Teal is a color that is rich, yet vibrant at the same time. Because of its boldness, it’s sometimes better as an accent color; pairing beautifully with black and white for a modern look.

Pastels

Most lighter shades give rooms a calm and relaxed feel. A light blue-green color (think of an ocean blue-sea green mix) will be refreshing and give off peaceful emotions. Blue overall produces feelings of serenity so any of the primary to lighter shades of the color work really well in a bedroom or bathroom. The color is so versatile too; choose turquoise for a more vibrant feel. Yellow is a wide ranging color from bright and sunny (great for a kitchen or a room with little natural light) to rich gold (see above) to a barely there soft buttery color. Any richness you choose, the overall feeling will be one of happiness and the brighter shade will also be energizing. And don’t dismiss pink. With the right supporting colors (greens and earth tones) the room can feel optimistic and happy.

Neutrals

Many people decorate almost entirely in neutral shades, believing they’ll have a simple, safe design look. It’s probably true, but it might also give your apartment a dull, lifeless feel. White walls are best for those who have contemporary furnishings or art to show off; a color that won’t distract from the room’s more interesting elements. Whites as well as creams are perfect for creating tranquil bedrooms; you can add soft touches of yellow, blue or silver for a little color. If you’d like to experiment with a monochrome look, designing an all-white bedroom is the perfect place to start. Grey has been the hot go-to color for a couple of years now and it works because it’s not white (which some people find boring) and it pairs so well with so many other colors. The classic color can be combined with greens for a relaxing vibe; purple for a more elegant look or gold for a cool meets warm color combo.

Always remember – your house, your mood, your rules. If you want a relaxing room, but can’t find a blue you like, skip it and go for a hue that makes you feel relaxed. In general, richer blues, greens and greys work best in a living room; shades of white, yellow and brown in the kitchen; light yellows or purples and neutrals in the bathroom and any range of basic blue to pale green look good in bedrooms. Hopefully using these colors as your base you can go on to decorate beautiful, happy rooms.
