Decorating on the Cheap: Painted Pattern Doors

Staff Writer · Dec 29, 2009

For many apartments and housing units where hollow-panel or other installed doors look a little drab, painted pattern doors can be a great effective way to dress up in interior space and make it look more alive. Painting pattern doors is a frugal decorating idea that many interior decorators may recommend to complement a specific design in a home. Read this article for a cheap design idea or two that you may have not considered.

How to Paint Patterns on Doors

Many pattern door painters use painter’s tape to mark out specific geometrical designs on a door. Those who want to give their doors a specific look can also use stencils to create repetitive shapes that they can distribute in distinctive patterns. Painters should choose brushes that can do the necessary work smoothly. A high quality brush will make most door painting jobs a lot easier. Rollers can also be used on single panel doors.

Preparing for Your Painting

Many experts recommend taking the hardware off of a door if possible before painting it. If the doorknob, hinges or other hardware pieces will not come off, painters can cover them with tape or some other protective cover to prevent splashing them.

It may also be a good idea to sand a door before painting. If the door surface is not smooth before painting, it may present complications that will lead to different results when the paint job is finished. Those who are painting over other materials will have to take care during sanding. It may only be necessary to just lightly buff the door to get it a bit smoother. After the door is sanded and prepared for painting, it’s time to look at specific color options for creating distinctive patterns that will stand out in an apartment or house.

Alternative Methods for Pattern Door Painting

One of the common complaints with painting is that paint tends to pool up around the edges of the door. Even with single panel, smooth door surfaces, painters can see a tendency for the paint to well up at the edges. Uneven edge services can also be a challenge.

One way around this is to use a spray painting method on a door. Applying spray paint from the correct distance will get an even, thin coating on the door surface.

Whether using traditional brush painting or spray painting methods, always allow for ventilation when painting. Follow all safety precautions to prevent excessive inhalation of paint fumes. Painters can also find neat low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints on sale at today’s “green housing” venues to limit the harmful effects of breathing in paint fumes.

When you’re looking at painted door patterns for sprucing up an interior, the sky’s the limit. Think about what matches existing wall designs, furnishings, or interior color schemes to give a space a solid, consistent character. This kind of good interior design can make a space more welcoming and livable for just a few dollars.
