Decorating the High Ceilings of Loft Apartments

Loft apartments offer a number of decorating alternatives for the apartment dweller. Because they have high ceilings, you have a lot of color options as well as choices with regards to lighting. Use your imagination and you can find interesting ways to decorate the high ceilings of these unique apartment homes.

Colorization

With high loft ceilings you have the opportunity to colorize your ceiling. Color will bring the height down and add interest and a bit of drama. Make your loft more welcoming by using darker, rich hues, which make the ceiling seem closer. Paint the walls and ceiling the same deep tint to lend cohesiveness to the space. Visually, painting the ceilings and walls in darker shades will make your loft look more comfortable and friendly. Choose colors such as rust or various shades of brown. Your ceiling will almost disappear at night when you use soft lighting. Colorizing your ceilings as well as your walls will make you loft feel more inviting and restful too.

Window Treatments

If the windows in your loft run the length of the floor to the ceiling, or even if they don’t, use drapes or panels that either run the full length or are set up higher. This will bring the whole space into proportion. Also, in a loft space, use draperies that are well-insulated to keep drafts at bay. Window treatments provide the proper balance so you can give added impact to your ceiling decor.

Hang Artwork at Eye Level

Balance holds true for artwork as well. If you want to add drama to the decor on your ceiling, don’t make the mistake of hanging the artwork too high in your loft. Make sure your pictures are hung at eye level to keep the emphasis away from the height of the ceiling. Use the same type of designs for your frames to maintain a sense of harmony. Also, limit your choices to one or two larger pictures rather than several small pieces of artwork. You might think about using tapestries or wall screens to accent and blend with the decor on your ceiling.

Make Use of Mouldings

Using decorative mouldings will bring the height of your ceiling down and complement any darker colors of paint you select. Choose dark-colored woods or even light-colored oak as a complement.

Lighting

Perhaps one of the most interesting ways to decorate the high ceiling of a loft is to choose a couple of interesting lights. Maybe you could add an  antique chandelier that is a thrift store find or include several retro pendant lights. You can really show off such lights when you have a high ceiling. In addition, you might want to include some recessed lighting. As stated, a dark ceiling with “soft” recessed lighting will create a nice ambiance, and will almost disappear in the resulting glow. Lighting can be put to good use in a loft apartment by using plants with uplights too. For instance, place tall tropical trees in the corners of your loft and include soft uplighting. Add some ceiling fans to complete the effect.

Loft apartment ceilings offer a number of decorating options. Make use of lighting, mouldings and color to create a place that’s warm and peaceful, and welcoming.
