European Decorating Ideas for Bedrooms

Staff Writer · Sep 21, 2009

Deciding to redecorate a bedroom is both exhilarating and potentially overwhelming. Decorating ideas for bedrooms are many and varied, but for modern interior design a European style gives a bedroom freshness and sophistication.

Tuscan Design

To create a Tuscan style in your bedroom space, focus on the warm, weathered colors associated with this Mediterranean region. Terra-cotta, olive, cinnamon, lavender and Mediterranean blue with dark woods and distressed, old-world furniture will warm up a bedroom and allow for a personal space that feels like a glass of vintage wine on a summer night. Marble, limestone, and brown leathers pair well with both polished and distressed wood pieces as long as everything in the room looks time-worn. Combining simple structures with more ornate, antique pieces will give your bedroom the depth and history of the beautiful Tuscan region.

Some Tuscan pieces to consider adding to a bedroom redesign:

  • Unpolished copper urns
  • Terracotta pots with large lush plants
  • antique rugs, either Persian or oriental laid over terracotta or hardwood floors
  • marble table tops with wrought-iron bases

Scandinavian Design

The hallmark of modern Scandinavian design is the crisp, clean lines and simple, elegant style it brings to a room. Scandinavian design maximizes open space and gives a room a light, airy feeling by the use of light woods, metal, and glass for furniture. Fabrics are simple and not busy prints. Chocolates, creams, charcoals, combined with accent colors that are brighter such as crimson, sea blue, or plant green, create an airy color palate that brings a the sophistication of the nordic countries to the bedroom. Rugs should be solid or with very simple, modern lines on them. Lush carpeting that you can sink your toes into is best; shaggy rugs are a perfect compliment to scandinavian design. Lots of light fixtures will bring the space together when combines with several strategically placed glass or metal vases. The simple lines and uncomplicated design of this modern European decorating will lighten up and add peace to any bedroom.

Some Scandinavian pieces to consider adding to a bedroom redesign:

  • Decorate geometric object such as glass spheres
  • Simply, lush rugs in solid colors such as chocolate, cream or charcoal
  • Bright accent pieces, such as several throw pillows or a decorative vase in red, orange or blue
  • Low furniture – platform beds that rest on or near the floor without a boxspring
  • Silver or aluminum accents on lighting and accessories

Pulling It Together

Take a few extra moments to pull all the elements of the room you’ve redesigned together into a cohesive style. Getting rid of visible clutter is an important step, but also make sure that the theme you have chosen carries through the entire bedroom. Modern art isn’t a good match for Tuscan style, so remove it and find a gold or wrought iron framed Renaissance art print to put in its place. Light fixtures should reflect the style as well, as they are a natural focal point.

With these simple color palates and style ideas, you will be able to transform your bedroom into the European getaway of your dreams!
