Finding Inspirations for Decorating a Living Room

Staff Writer · Dec 23, 2009

When you live in an apartment, most of your inspirations for decorating a living room are based on its small size or dimensions. Therefore, much of what you pick is founded on the items that will work well in a small living room. Whether it’s the living room furniture you select or the type of living room pictures you choose to decorate your walls, your source of ideas are formulated by the dimensions of your small abode.

Walls and Ceilings

Usually in a small area it’s best to use pale or neutral colors for your walls and ceilings. The ceiling should be painted a lighter color than the walls to give the area a more expansive look. If you want to add a bit of whimsy, choose pastels in pinks, creams and greens. For a light and airy look, color walls in pale teal or blue with a beige or white ceiling. Use paint with a glossy finish so it reflects light in interesting ways. To give your small apartment added dimension, keep colors monochromatic. Select a color, such as green and combine it with comparable tones and shades. Therefore, if you choose light green, you can combine it with a slightly darker shade of green or a lighter tone. You can impart neutral colors into the decor such as beige as an added accent.

Windows

To accessorize your curtains, add valances, swags, drapes and tie-backs in light-textured materials for a summery look. In winter, add a bit of coziness by choosing gingham or tartan prints for your drapes or window treatments.

Flooring

To add to the warmth in your small abode, wooden flooring or a laminate floor with the look of wood is a comfortable look that lends a homey feel. Neutral throw rugs add just the right accent to your theme as well.

Living Room Furniture and Accessories

The furniture and accessories for your living room showcases your personal tastes. Still, they need to fit well into your small space. If you like Gothic styling, choose rich textured upholstery with dark wood. Dark green and gold are suitable colors for the fabric. Or maybe you’d like to elect for a bit of Tudor styling. Then a wrought iron chandelier or wall sconce might add a nice accent to your furnishings. Then again, Georgian furniture works well in a small living area. Many carpets at the time were neutral in color and pieces of furniture were dainty with gilding a marquetry. If you happen to find an antique that replicates Chippendale styling, then this is a nice piece of furniture to add to a small space. Maybe you’re inspired by more modern styles. Then you want furniture that is streamlined and doesn’t sit up high. Choose furniture made of leather and natural woods or add items made of glass and stainless steel to give your apartment a contemporary feel.

Floral Inspirations

No matter where you find your inspiration, you can always add flowers, whether it be on your walls or on your pillows or cushions. With modern designs, use bold florals while employ soft prints for traditional styles.

Find inspiration from history or culture and add it to your own personal style.
