Four Tips for Furnishing a Comfortable Guest Room

Staff Writer · Jun 29, 2010

A comfortable guest room is key to having a house that is open and inviting for family and friends coming to visit. A guest room should allow your guests to relax and feel at home while on vacation, making them want to return time and time again. Here are some tips to help ensure your guests will be comfortable in your newly decorated guest room.

Comfortable Bed and Mattress

Purchasing a comfortable mattress and bed for the guest room is the first step to making sure they are going to enjoy their stay. There is nothing worse than spending a week on an old, flimsy mattress that does not allow you to get a good nights sleep. Because it is a guest room and does not get used as frequently, you may be tempted to buy a cheap mattress or use an old one from another bedroom, but don’t. Purchase a quality mattress that will allow your guests the rest and relaxation they deserve while on vacation. Soft sheets and bedding are an important feature too. Instead of using old cast offs left behind from old bedroom sets, invest in a new comfortable set of sheets and bedding.

Tables and Chairs

You may think that the guest room needs a bed and that is about it when it comes to furniture, but adding some tables and chairs to the space makes a big difference. Bedside nightstands with drawers may not necessarily be needed but you should have some sort of nightstand or table for your guests to use. A place to set down a book or glass of water in reach makes the room that much more enjoyable. Adding an extra chair or two to the room is a nice touch as well, allowing your guests a place to sit and relax, other than the bed.

Plenty of Storage

One thing that makes a guest feel right at home is being able to unpack and not live out of their suitcase for their stay. Ensure there is enough closet space and empty hangers for them to use, along with some sort of storage such as an empty dresser. If a dresser is not available to be stored in the guest room you may want to purchase a few plastic storage drawers to place in the closet for guests to use for any clothes they would like to store.

Make a Welcoming Basket

A neat way to make a great impression on guests is to fill up a cute basket with items they may need during their visit. Add some guest towels and washcloths along with some toothpaste and shampoo. Add a pitcher for water and a few cups next to the basket so your guests will not need to venture to the kitchen during the night for a glass of water. If you have an extra miniature coffee maker, you can place that on the table in the guest room as well along with some coffee, tea bags and coffee mugs added to your basket. Your guests will feel so spoiled, they may never want to leave.
