Four Vegetarian-Friendly Cities to Consider

Staff Writer · Apr 1, 2010

If you’re one of those people who like to eat healthily and find it sometimes difficult to locate a restaurant that serves up vegetarian cuisine, take heart, as there are a number of vegetarian friendly cities that cater to your special and specific tastes.

1. New York – A Vegetarian-Friendly Metropolis

If you want to enjoy a diversity of vegetarian friendly restaurants, then you need look no further than the “Big Apple.” In fact, you may as well call the city the “Big Broccoli,” given the number of restaurants that offer vegetarian foods on their menus. One such restaurant is the Gobo Restaurant where you can relish your veggies in a trendy, Zen-like atmosphere or take a breather from exercise by enjoying a drink from their organic juice bar. You also won’t want to miss eating at the number one rated vegetarian restaurant in the city, Candle 79. Enjoy your food in a beautiful duplex that offers such specialties as Chili Grilled Seitan and Citrus-herb Grilled Tempeh.

2. Portland, Oregon – Look West for Vegetarian Fare

Portland, Oregon also caters to vegetarians. Regardless of your taste or budget, the city has many offerings. The Vegetarian House offers a sizable selection of Chinese style vegetarian fare in a retro atmosphere influenced by fluorescent lighting and institutional green walls. Sit down for a spell and delight in a serving of tofu hush puppies in tangy, thick sauce or mu shu “beef” with shredded vegetables and mushrooms. If you prefer to stay in, then the Food Fight Vegan Grocery is the place to pick. It can ship any vegetarian goodies straight to your door.

3.  Seattle – Choose from an Array of Vegetarian Restaurants

Seattle, Washington is another vegetarian friendly place and boasts over 40 restaurants that do not serve meat. Thrive is one of these restaurants and has a menu that is also dairy-and-gluten-free. For Chinese vegetarian food, you’re sure to enjoy the fare at the Bamboo Garden. Savor their Shanghai Style Rice Pasta with Chicken and Veggies or delight in their Taro Root Patties dipped in sweet ‘n sour or mustard sauce.

4. Toronto – The Pick for Vegetarian Cuisine Outside the U.S.

Outside the U.S., Toronto, Canada is the place to go if you want to find restaurants that tout vegetarian fare. If you’re in the mood for southern Indian cuisine, then you won’t want to miss a visit to the Annapurna Vegetarian Restaurant. You can try such Indian dishes as Idli (steamed rice and urad dumplings with coconut chutney) or Indian breads, such as Chapati or Puri. They also offer baked potatoes with toppings of mushroom gravy, melted cheddar cheese or seasoned yogurt. If your tastes tend towards Chinese food, then the Full Moon Vegetarian Restaurant offers Asian cuisine in a casual atmosphere. Choose from such selections as Shanghai Style Rice Pasta with Chicken and Veggies or Crispy Fried Taro Root Patties dipped in sweet ‘n sour or mustard sauce.

Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, the above cities are good to keep in mind as they offer a number of great restaurants that serve up healthy food that is delicious too.
