Going on Vacation? Consider a Pet Hotel

Staff Writer · Mar 3, 2010

Consider a pet hotel when you plan your next vacation. It’s a great opportunity to take your pets with you, and the level of care and entertainment they receive will put you at ease. These have grown in popularity over the years, and many are able to accommodate even the most exotic pets. The options range from a cozy “at home” atmosphere to a luxurious high class hotel, and everything in between. Here are some highlights about pet hotels worth considering:

Services

Just about anything your pet would need is available at most pet hotels. Grooming services are offered to pets and cats, and is often included in the hotel fee. Of course your pets will get daily walks, as often as four times a day. Some hotels offer pet massages, which can benefit older or injured pets. Other pet hotels offer medical services, such as insulin injections. All of them include a cleaning service to keep your pets’ environment sanitary and healthy.

Before booking a hotel, find out as much as you can about how well they perform the services they offer. For example, check the website of The Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org, to see what complaints were filed against the hotel in regards to services. Check to see how or if the complaints were resolved and whether the business has a pattern for the types of complaints filed against it.

Amenities

Pet hotels are like people hotels, in that they’re always open for business. Many pet hotels allow you to check in pets seven days a week, which is important when you’re planning your own hotel arrival and departure. Also, most hotels have a central heating and cooling system to make your pets comfortable. The rooms are often climate controlled, to ensure the safest temperatures. Enclosed courtyards for pets to play freely under the watchful eyes of hotel attendants, are one of the major attractions for pet hotels as opposed to a pet friendly hotel. Some hotels also offer spas and salons for pets on the premises.

Rooms

Pet hotels vary on the living quarters available to pets during their stay. The more pricey hotels will house pets in their own condos, whereas more affordable hotels function more like a pet boarding facility, offering a raised platform bed and blankets. The important consideration is that the overall facility is clean, and that your pet’s environment is kept clean and sanitary. To that end, some hotels have air purifiers where your pet stays, and people who clean the area to remove bacteria and other microbes.

Pet hotels major on comfort and happiness, which is why pet owners like to use them. Consider booking a pet hotel for your pets when you plan your next vacation. Ask the owner or manager for references from past and current customers. Asking friends and coworkers for referrals to pet hotels they’ve been happy with will also ensure that you find the best ones for your pets.
