When your looking for bathroom ideas, don’t forget the green. Making eco-friendly choices in your home can reduce the impact that you have on the earth’s resources as well as your wallet. You don’t have to sacrifice style when you’re making these changes. Many of today’s earth-friendly options look great as well. When you are thinking about bath remodeling, don’t forget to take these ideas into account.

Saving Water

Wasting water can be a big problem in some bathrooms. Just one leaky faucet or toilet can lead to huge increases in your monthly water bill. Choose plumbing fixtures that will last a long time and waste less water. You can purchase low-flow shower heads and toilets that use less water. You won’t notice the difference until you see the savings on your water bill. For more energy saving power from your shower, try turning down the thermostat on your hot water tank. You can also save water at the sink faucet.

It is becoming more popular for individual consumers to purchase those automatic faucets that you see at public restrooms. The water comes on instantly when you put your hands under it and stops when you take them away. This means that when you are washing your face or brushing your teeth, the water can turn off automatically until you need to rinse. None of these new water-saving plumbing fixtures sacrifice style either. They come in the same sleek designs that ordinary bathroom fixtures do.

Avoid Dangerous Chemicals

Are there dangerous chemicals lurking in your bathroom? You might not think so, but dangerous substances can be found in innocent-looking products. Check out your cleaning supplies. Are there noxious fumes when you try to clean? You may be using products that could harm your family, pets and the environment. Look for all-natural cleaning products with harmless ingredients. Or find recipes for cleaners you can make out of perfectly safe household items like vinegar and baking soda. They are just as effective but healthier. Another hidden source of toxins is the paint that you use in your bathroom. Look for bathroom paint ideas that use eco-friendly paints that contain less VOC’s. VOC’s are volatile organic compounds and can pollute the air as well as your lungs. Many brands of paints offer versions will less of these.

Green Materials for the Bathroom

When remodeling your bath, use sustainable and recycled materials. One material option that has become very popular is bamboo. Bamboo is an eco-friendly material because it takes much less energy to grow and harvest than other materials, like wood. It is a fast-growing plant that creates oxygen for the environment, and a lot of bamboo can be harvested from one plant without killing it. Bamboo is also a great building material because it will last a long time. It stands up to steam and water better than wood. You can even find bathroom accessories, like hampers, medicine cabinets and shelves, that are made from bamboo. Another option is to used salvaged materials to redo your bathroom. Salvaged subway tile or a vintage porcelain sink will not only look stylish, but will save one more item from being dumped in a landfill.
