How to Be a Considerate Dog Owner

Staff Writer · Feb 18, 2010

Being a dog owner is a wonderful experience filled with fun and laughter. However, just because you love your dog does not mean that others will also. Owning a dog requires hard work, training and discipline to make sure that both you and your dog are respectful of your neighbors.

Discipline Both Yourself and Your Dog

Owning a well-behaved dog requires discipline for both you and the dog. Jumping on visitors, aggressiveness towards others and biting are behaviors no dog should display. These actions could result in harm to yourself or others and should be addressed as soon as possible. Because of the proximity between apartment dwellers it is essential that your dog not engage in any of these behaviors.

While you may feel badly confining your dog to a specific area, telling him not to do certain things or setting other boundaries dogs need discipline to behave well. Whether your dog is young or old, training will benefit both you and him. In training, you both will learn the proper relationships and roles for canines and humans. If you are unable to afford professional training, purchase or check out a book from the library.

Keep Your Dog Healthy

Regular veterinarian visits are crucial for your dog. At minimum, your dog should visit the doctor twice a year. Not only will these visits expose any serious medical issues but they will also keep your dog up to date on his vaccinations, registration and other tests. Typically, a dog is required to be registered in your county, a task possibly done by your veterinarian. If you are unable to afford veterinary care, there may be a low-cost animal clinic in your town offering services at reduced rates.

A Clean Dog Is a Lovely Dog

A smelly dog is an unhappy and unpleasant dog. Wash your dog frequently, clip his nails, clean his ears and brush him to remove loose hair and reduce shedding. These things are particularly important if your dog will be in other’s homes. Pet groomers and veterinarian’s offices are able to do these things if you are unable or unwilling. You may be surprised that cleaning your dog means you will spend less time cleaning your home.

Your dog is a source of love and enjoyment. However, owning a dog requires you to do more than just provide affection. Discipline and health care are vital aspects of caring for your dog.  The effort you put into caring for your canine will not be lost on others.
