How to Choose the Right Accent Table for Your Apartment

Staff Writer · Feb 19, 2010

Choosing the right accent table is a key to having a well-balanced apartment. While you want the accent table to be functional, it should also show off your unique style and make sense with the rest of the apartment’s layout.

Step One: Decide on Your Budget

Accent tables come in a broad range of prices. Before you start shopping for your apartment’s accent table, you should decide on the highest price you are willing to purchase the accent table for.

Remember to include tax, shipping, or delivery charges in to your budget. Shipping and delivery charges can add a substantial amount to the overall cost. If you will need the furniture assembled for you this will also add an additional charge. Furniture companies will have these charges listed on their website and in their stores.

Step Two: Measure the Room

Before you can start shopping for an accent table you need to know where that table will go. Pick out a spot in your apartment for the future table to sit. Measure the spot, making sure you consider the location of other furniture. You want to be able to freely walk around all sides of an accent table. Also, if you have unusually low furniture, such as a modern style, take this in to consideration in your measurements. You do not want your table to sit higher then your sofa or chairs.

Step Three: Decide on a Style

There are several styles, shapes, and colors of accent tables. For example, you could choose a modern style red, plastic accent table, or you could choose a classic Queen Anne rounded table in Oak wood. The shape and style of your accent style will greatly depend on your personal preferences. However, you should consider both the look of the apartment as well as the look of the rest of your furniture. You want the accent table to blend well with the apartment layout as a whole.

Step Four: Comparison Shop

You have three options for buying an accent table. You can purchase your table online, in a traditional furniture store, or you can buy a used accent table at an estate sale or other used furniture outlet. No matter where you choose to buy your furniture it is important that you comparison shop before buying. Furniture prices vary widely between retailers. The same piece can fluctuate more then one hundred dollars from store to store. Also, be sure to consider the cost of shipping or delivery when you are choosing a furniture dealer. Several furniture outlets will offer free delivery and set up. This could save you hundreds of dollars.

The right accent table will bring a room together and show of your unique style. When choosing an accent table remember to consider your budget, measure your room and shop around before deciding on one piece.
