How to Decorate with Modular Carpet

Staff Writer · Aug 10, 2010

Modular carpet is a great way to rejuvenate a room or in your area. Does your living space need new flooring? For those who are replacing worn floor coverings, outfitting unfinished areas, or refurbishing an apartment in between residents, modular carpet can make the job a lot easier.

Versatile Carpeting For All Kinds of Spaces

For landlords and others who are dealing with replacing carpet, modular carpet can take some of the work out of fitting floor covering needs to a specific set of rooms. Modular carpet comes in regular sizes, usually squares, where designers can measure and plan for a specific “tiled” layout. Just like single piece carpeting, modular carpet tiles can be cut to fit a space, but unlike single piece carpets, these floor covering solutions can be quickly changed if the floor plan isn’t quite what you thought it would be, or if there are obstacles that make regular installation difficult.

Dealing With Carpet Wear

A big benefit of modular carpeting is that parts can be replaced in the event of localized damage. Over time, carpet may be worn down, burned, stained, damaged by water or otherwise destroyed. Those who have supplies of modular carpeting on hand can easily take up pieces and replace them without taking up the whole floor. This can take a lot of work out of ongoing maintenance for a property.

Installation

For most interior spaces, decorators will want to use modular carpet much like regular carpeting. Modular carpet tiles may require different types of adhesives to substitute for the edge-designed adhesive structures popular with single piece carpeting. For smaller spaces, modular carpet can sometimes be laid down without adhesive. Similarly, modular carpet tiles can be used like area rugs, where no adhesive is necessary. However, for a conventional look where the modular carpet acts like a single piece carpet for a total room area, many homeowners and others will want to permanently fix all of these pieces to the floor. Installing modular carpeting tiles in patterns can create neat visual designs, even with solid color tile choices.

Thinking About Materials

Just as with permanent single piece carpeting, buyers will want to think about what they are selecting for modular carpet needs. Today’s carpeting can be made with sustainable materials, or with less health hazards that tend to threaten indoor air quality. Many of these, called VOCs, are released from carpeting within a few days of installation. Those who want to protect inhabitants of a building can buy low-VOC carpet; they can also leave the building vacant for several days after the installation, and air the building out thoroughly, so that the harmful effects of VOCs are minimized. Modular carpet makes it easier to deal with some of these fumes, since the small pieces can be aired out more easily.

In addition to VOC content, some buyers want to choose less wasteful modular carpet choices that include options for recycling or carpeting made from reclaimed material.

All of the above make modular carpeting an attractive choice for buyers.
