How to Find Your Decorating Style

Daphne Mallory · Nov 12, 2010

Everyone has a decorating style that they connect with, one that draws them in. It usually reflects your personality or desires, and when you don’t incorporate it into your apartment, it can frustrate you over time. You don’t have to be a homeowner to settle into your favorite decorating style. The trick is to find inspiration and adapt it to your apartment as best as you can. Here’s how to find inspiration:

Start with Extended Family

Is there something about someone else’s home that you love, but don’t know why? The next time you visit, do some investigative work into the decorating style. You may not have realized before how much the theme and decorating they chose resonates with you. Ask them about it, and don’t be shy about whipping out a pen and notebook to take notes. What colors and design elements do they use? Do they follow a particular decorating style on purpose, and if so, what is it? They will appreciate the fact that you’ve noticed it, enjoy it and want to learn from them. Brainstorm with them ways that you can use the same decorating style in your apartment, and if you’re on a limited budget, ask them for ideas on how to save money in the process.

Browse Home Decorating Magazines

Expand your search to magazines if you don’t derive inspiration from the apartment and homes of relatives. Online and offline publications take amazing pictures of decorating ideas, and all it takes is finding a few pictures that you like to nail down your decorating style. Some famous print publications that are proven to showcase quality projects are Real Simple, Better Home & Gardens and Country Living. These also have websites that you can browse as well for ideas. Cut or save any pictures you like and keep them in a file folder or bookmark them. When you’ve got 10 or more pictures, look through them again to see if a pattern emerges. You may be drawn to two or three styles, but there will be one decorating style that you like the most.

Visit Furniture Showrooms

Take advantage of the beautiful showrooms in your local furniture and department stores for inspiration. This is even better than pictures because you can see a decorating style live and engage your other senses, such as touch. Ask a representative about a decorating style that you like, and take notes. Notice the accessories they use, including lamps, area rugs, pillows and draperies. Be as specific as possible with your questions so that you leave with enough information to do more research.

Online Quizzes

Online quizzes are a great way to find your decorating style, and learn more about interior decorating at the same time.  For example, there’s a quiz on www.sproost.com, that lets you rate pictures of rooms to help you figure out your personal decorating style. When you complete the quiz, you’ll get three styles back, with a percent to indicate which decorating style you like the most, and suggested furniture to match.

Your decorating style may change over time, but for now, it’s good to find out what you like best. Use the above guidelines to find inspiration for decorating your apartment.
