Feng shui is an ancient Chinese science and art that deals with spatial arrangement and energy flow. It can be used when designing buildings and arranging rooms to optimize positive energy in a space. Read on for some tips on how to integrate some of these principles into your apartment.

Some feng shui basics: you need color; you must get rid of clutter, and light is very important as well. We’ll begin with color. Each color is an expression of one of the five elements of feng shui which are water, wood, metal, earth and fire. You choose the colors you want based on the energy you want the space to create. So if you want to incorporate calm and abundance into your life, choose the water colors of black and blue. The wood colors are brown and green and not surprisingly they bring health and growth to your life. For clarity and efficiency, utilize the metal colors of grey and white, while for nourishment and stability, look to the earth colors of yellow and beige. Finally, reds and oranges are fire colors and should be used for energy. Color is easily added to rooms via art, curtains, pillows and linens, flower pots, etc.

The other big consideration when using feng shui in your design is furniture arrangement and placement. These are the ideal situations, your actual experience will vary based on room size, furniture owned, etc.

Living Room

Place the couch against the wall, with a view to the door. Make sure your layout is encouraging to conversation, you want people to feel close and comfortable, but not sitting on top of each other. Ensure the walkways into and around the space are clear; no chair, etc. to walk around. As for tables, create a mix of shapes, including round, especially best for your coffee table. Always make sure there is light, everywhere. If you have a dark corner, add a floor lamp. Put one of your favorite possessions in an easy to see place; every time you walk into the room, you will feel a sense of happiness.

Bedroom

For the best feng shui, place your bed on the wall farthest from the door, making sure you have a clear view of the door. Leave space on both sides of the bed and use nightstands with table lamps on either side. You’ll also want to ensure lots of comforting linens and hang a favorite piece of art over the bed or a light fixture you love. The best colors for the bedroom are ‘skin’ tones ranging from white to brown. Also, keep all electronics out of the space (phone, computer, TV, etc.)

One easy and fun tip to incorporate feng shui into your home is to buy an aquarium, mainly because they include all five feng shui elements: water, wood (plants), metal (the aquarium itself), earth (the rocks in the tank) and finally fire via the brightly colored fish. However, don’t put the aquarium in the kitchen or bedroom, this will bring unwanted energies to those rooms. Also, make sure you have the time to properly clean and care for the fish.

The end goal of feng shui is to harmonize your life’s energy with your home’s. And whether or not you believe in creating a good flow of energy, having a light, bright, clutter-free space is a good design plan!
