How to Manage Dog Shedding

Staff Writer · Mar 18, 2010

Dog shedding is problematic for tenants who don’t want to damage carpets, or suffer from allergies. You risk losing some of your security deposit for this one problem, if you don’t learn how to manage dog shedding. You may not have much choice but to get another breed of dog if you have problems with allergies. However, the proper management of dog shedding can eliminate or at least alleviate these problems.

Improve Your Dog’s Diet

Start with your pet’s diet when you want to manage dog shedding. A healthy diet with vitamin supplements will reduce the amount of dog shedding. Don’t grab the cheapest dog food available at the grocery store. Find food that’s high in protein and fiber content, and doesn’t contain a lot of carbohydrates as “fillers”. Keep this in mind if you make homemade meals for your dogs. Vitamin B, Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are great choices for supplements to add to your dog’s food. It will help with the dog shedding and other problems at the same time, such as tick prevention.

Prevent Dry Skin

Dry skin leads to dog shedding, and you can prevent it by bathing your dog. Schedule a time once a week to give your dogs a bath. Find a mild shampoo to use that will also act as a moisturizer. It’s hard for your dog to develop dry skin with this technique. Your dog will reward you with less shedding as a result. If the size of your apartment makes it difficult to bathe your dog, or if it’s otherwise inconvenient, consider enlisting the help of a dog groomer. A professional groomer or a neighborhood teen looking to earn extra cash might be good options.

Brush Your Dog’s Hair

The easiest way to manage dog shedding is to brush your dog’s hair. There are shedding combs and brushes that are designed specifically for this job. The entire body needs to brushing, and to be effective, you have to figure out the direction that hair grows and brush in that direction. You can buy shedding blades to help remove excess hair, and it’s a good idea to wear gloves while you do this. Choose a place in the apartment where the hair won’t fall on the carpet. If wall to wall carpet makes this impossible, then you’ll have to use newspaper or cut open a garbage bag to place under your dog while brushing. Brush your dog’s hair once a day for the best results.

Keep Fleas and Ticks Away

Prevent fleas and ticks from biting your dog, and you’ll manage dog shedding at the same time. When your dog scratches all the time because of the biting from fleas and ticks, he’ll shed hair all over your apartment. Use topical drops or boost their vitamin supplements to keep these creatures from biting them, and watch the reduction in dog shedding.

Now that you know how to manage dog shedding, the toughest part is taking the time to implement these suggestions. Schedule time to take care of your dog until it becomes a habit.
