How to Throw a Cool Western Party in Your Apartment

Staff Writer · Sep 21, 2010

A western party is a lot of fun and does not require a big backyard in order to throw one. A fun western themed party can be thrown anywhere including your small apartment. A western party is a great theme to use for a little boys birthday party or as a party for adults to cut loose and have fun.

Decorations for the Party

Western themed decorations should be easy to find at local party stores. Most will have a wide variety of decorations to choose from. Fake cowboy hats can be found at many stores and can be used as party favors or placed around the room as decoration. Bandannas can be purchased at western stores and used as decoration tied around cups or soda bottles. For a cute room decoration, tie a whole string of bandannas together and use it as a streamer across a wall. Use green construction paper to cut out some cactus shapes and tape them to a few of the walls.

A Western Feel to the Party

Besides decorations there is a lot that can be done to give the party that western feel to it. Dress up yourself in a western looking outfit complete with cowboy boots and a hat and welcome guests to dress up as well. Leave some decks of cards around the room like an old saloon would have, making guests feel free to play cards and interact with other guests. Use music to set the mood as well with some favorite country western singers playing in the background. Music from older country singers such as Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson can be mixed in with more modern country music from Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood.

Drinks and Food for Guests

A western themed party leaves food selection open for interpretation. A sit down dinner is too stuffy for this type of event and does not allow as much interaction between guests. Instead, set up trays off food on a centralized serving table or at several smaller food stations throughout the room. Finger foods are best and allow guests to eat while socializing. Barbecued chicken, hamburgers or chili dogs make a great main dish. Drinks such as punch or soda can be used or to continue with the country western theme use root beer or regular beers for the adults.

Games for the Party

Games and entertainment always liven up a party whether it is for kids or not. For a kids party, pin the tail on the donkey is a great game for this theme. Some games can be used for an adult party as well, or have the adults and kids participate together. Musical cowboy hats is fun for both young and old. Many party stores carry pinatas in a variety of shapes and sizes and will most likely have one to match a western theme. This is a fun game for any kids party but it can also be worth a few laughs when adults are involved. Be sure to clear the area of anything breakable and use a plastic bat or conduct this one in a small open area outside the apartment.
