Innovative Wall Decorating Ideas

Say goodbye to blank white walls and employ some innovative wall decorating ideas.

Decals Instead of Picture Frames

Ditch the picture frames and mats and turn the actual wall into a piece of art. If you’re looking for a creative and artistic accent for a bare wall, consider using decorative wall decals. Several companies and artists specialize in creating these beautiful designs that can be peeled off of a backing and applied directly to the wall. They don’t cause any damage to the paint and can be peeled off if you change your mind later. They can look great in many different settings. Imagine a baby’s room with pastel silhouettes of birds and trees. You can also buy these decals in text designs. Spell out a favorite quote to grace the wall above your bed. Text is often overlooked as a great design element.

New Uses of Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back in style with a vengeance. For a while there, everyone was stripping the old wallpaper off their walls and replacing it with a nice smooth coat of paint. While a great paint job can rarely be topped, wallpaper lovers will be happy to know that some of today’s top decorators are using high quality designer wallpaper to turn walls into works of art. Gone are the days of tiny delicate floral patterns. The hottest design trends in wallpaper are bold, dramatic and large scale. If you are feeling hesitant about taking the plunge into a fully patterned room, try doing an accent wall. Cover the main focal wall in a bold patterned wallpaper and then paint the remaining walls in a color that complements the pattern.

Your Favorite Photos

Want a way to display your photos without making your wall look like a mess of mismatched frames? Put careful consideration into the style and arrangement of frames. Instead of collecting a bunch of different decorative frames, invest in a set of frames that all match. This way, the viewers eyes will be directed to the photograph, not a gaudy collection of souvenier vacation frames. One way to dramatically enahance photos and turn them from snapshots into art is to print them in black and white. Instead of placing frames randomly around the room, plan the layout. Cut out pieces of paper in the same sizes of your frames. Then use removable tape and try different arrangments. An evenly spaced repetitive pattern can look neat and modern. An asymmetrical collage of frames can look more casual. When you’re pleased with the layout, replace the paper with the frames and enjoy your own gallery.

On the Cheap

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to add a splash of color and design to your walls without spending a fortune on a piece of art, get a little creative. You can find great designer scrapbook paper at craft stores for under a dollar per sheet. Pick out a few bold designs that complement your room colors and decor. Then buy a few larger inexpensive frames. Place a precut mat in the frame and secure the scrapbook paper behind it. The result is an instant artistic focal point without the expense.
