Interior Decorating Tips: Choosing the Right Rug

Rachael Weiner · Dec 24, 2009

In the process of interior decorating, you’ll find that placing a rug on the floor can make a huge-and favorable-difference in the overall look and feel of a room. Determining what kind of rug to use can be tricky, as there are numerous types for you to choose. Also, the process is never just as simple as “buying a rug.” There are also several factors to take into consideration. It’s best to get it right the first time, as rugs aren’t the easiest thing to return to the store! Before you buy, consider the following.

Think About the Rug’s Primary Function

You’re probably thinking that your rug’s primary function is to cover the floor, and you’re partially correct. However, are you looking for a rug that does more in your room than just that? Are you looking for something soft for you to walk and stand on or where your pets can lay? Are you trying to break up a large room by strategically placing a rug in the space? Rugs can have several functions. Besides covering floor space, adding comfort and adding dimension to a room, a rug can also make your interior space much more aesthetically pleasing. If a rug’s only purpose is to cover the floor, everyone would be satisfied with the simple, plain and inexpensive rectangle rugs found in discount retail stores. Figure out what it is you want your rug to do-look stylish, feel soft, hold up against significant wear and tear from pets, etc.-as you’re deciding what kind of rug to buy.

Think About What Kind of Rug You Want

Rugs come in all shapes and sizes. You can buy basic functional rugs and fancy ornate ones. Having a basic idea of of what sort of rug you want in your room upfront is a much better idea than shopping without any idea whatsoever. Rug characteristics to take into consideration are size, shape, design (solid versus print), color, texture, durability and price. Look through home catalogs or online to see what kind of rugs appeal to you. You can find sufficient rugs at all price points-$20 will get you a simple utilitarian rug at Walmart.

Think About What Will Work Best in Your Room

If you have a highly-trafficked living room or are living with pets, choosing a fancy and expensive printed rug probably isn’t the best choice. On the other hand, if you’re placing a rug in your bedroom or office, you can probably choose something a little nicer. Also, keep in mind the overall look and size of the room. You want the rug to fit the decor. For instance, if you have large furniture, a small dainty rug will look out of place. If you have classic furniture, an ultra-modern rug isn’t the way to go.

Take the time to evaluate your room’s layout, decor and size before you make your rug selection. With the numerous choices out there, you’re sure to find something that fits your needs.
