Living with Dogs: Finding the Right Breed for Your Personality

Staff Writer · Mar 29, 2010

Living with dogs can be a challenge, especially if you choose a breed that conflicts with your personality. Therefore, before you choose a dog, it’s important to find out if your personality will gel with his temperament as well as determine what kind of care he needs so you can live in perfect harmony.

Assess Your Own Personality

Before you even begin to determine what type of dog breed will fit with your personality, you need to make an assessment of your own characteristics. Are you a sensitive person who needs affection? Then, of course, you’ll need a devoted, gentle pet. Maybe you’re not good at handling stressful situations, then by no means pick a dog that enjoys a lot of activity or requires extra attention. Likewise, if you’re someone who likes nothing better than to plop down on the couch and watch TV, it certainly wouldn’t be advisable to choose a breed who needs a good bit of exercise either. Think about how the dog’s activity level, friendliness and intelligence can be adapted with your own personal traits.

Determine How Much Exercise the Dog will Require

As indicated, you’ll need to find out how much exercise your dog will need. If you’re a person who maintains a busy work schedule, then you’ll probably be happier if you choose a gentle, friendly dog that doesn’t need to be walked two or three times a day. On the other hand, you may have the type of personality that thrives on exercise and might want to spend time with a dog who can accompany you on your daily runs. Therefore, think about how much time you can devote to giving your pet the exercise he needs. If you’re physically active, then, of course, you’ll probably want a dog who is physically active too.

Consider the Amount of Grooming your Dog Will Need

If you enjoy caring for others, you may not mind spending the needed time to groom certain breeds. On the other hand, you might be someone who wants the company of a canine that doesn’t need to be brushed on a routine basis. That’s why it’s important to consider what activities you want to involve yourself in when you own a dog. You’ll both get along better if you spend time with a dog whose activity level and requirements for care can mesh with your life and schedule.

Dogs that Require Little Exercise

If you want a dog that needs minimal exercise, then you can find a number of breeds that fit this category. Beagles fall under this classification although they are disposed to having certain health problems such as epilepsy. Other dogs that can also get by on a lower amount of exercise include Boston terriers, Bichon Frises (although they’re difficult to groom), Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Parson Russell Terriers, Shih Tzus and Pekingese.

Kid-Friendly Dogs

Probably the dogs that work out the best with all types of personalities are dogs that love kids as well as adults. Kid-friendly dogs include Beagles, Bichon Frises, Border Terriers, Boston Terriers, Cairn Terriers and English Cocker Spaniels, with Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers distinguished as the most kid-friendly of all.

There is a dog out there that will fit with your personality. You just need to deliberate a little and you’ll discover him.
