Looking for an Air Purifier? 4 Features to Compare

Staff Writer · Jan 26, 2010

There are many health benefits that you gain by owning an air purifier. However, there isn’t a one size fits all purifier. What you buy will depend on the features and what you hope it will do for you. If you’re looking for an air purifier, here are 4 features to compare:

1. Indicator Lights

Air purifiers can only work well when you replace the filters when necessary. You wouldn’t try to use a vacuum cleaner that has a full bag or filter. The same applies to an air purifier. The indicator light on it will tell you when it’s time to replace the filter. This is an important feature and the one you’ll be paying the most attention to. When the lights come on, it’s time to replace your filter. If you have an air purifier with a precipitator collector plate, you’ll have to wash it.

2. Weight

How heavy is the air purifier you want to buy? You might want a portable one to move from room to room with ease. Some purifiers have wheels to move them around as well. The cost may limit the number of air purifiers you purchase. For example, you may only be able to afford one. However, if you would like to purify the air in more than one room, you’ll need to move it around, which means the weight feature does matter.

3. Fan

Some air filters are quieter than others, and it’s the fan (or lack of one) that makes the difference. The air purifiers that use a fan to suck in the air are more effective than the ones that don’t use a fan. If you’re more concerned about getting rid of allergens and other pollutants than the noise issue, than go with an air purifier that has a fan.

4. Filter Replacement

If you’ve bought an one in the past and got frustrated with having to change the filter all the time, don’t give up on air purifiers yet. There are many air purifiers that require the owner to constantly monitor and replace filters. On the other hand, there are air purifiers with filters that are made to last a long time before needing to replace them. For example, Allenair Air Purifiers have HEPA filters that only have to be replaced once every five years.

4. High Efficiency Particle Arresting (HEPA) Filters

Different air purifiers cleanse the air of the pollutants and particles they were designed to “attack.” If you have a specific health problem that you’re dealing with, then you have to buy the right air purification system. Air purifiers with high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) filters are designed to cleanse the air of bacteria and viruses. These are great to have year round, especially during flu season. The filters don’t have to be changed regularly like other air purifiers.

Air purifiers can be expensive, so make the right choice. Compare features carefully, keeping in mind your health needs.
