Small Apartment Furniture Solutions

Small spaces can often times be difficult to decorate if you don’t have small apartment furniture in mind. Too much furniture can make a small space seem overcrowded. Choose furniture that fits proportionately into your space, and utilize your floor space as well as your wall space.

Bigger is Not Better

When you start furniture shopping, you need to have small apartment furniture on your mind. Those big sofas with tons of cushions can easily catch your eye as you plan your living room decoration. A large sofa, however, will not work in your small space. Instead of looking at full size sofas, look at loveseats. Loveseats are smaller, usually with seating for two, but they are just as comfortable. Almost any sofa probably has a loveseat available in the same color and style. Many loveseats also offer pull out beds. A loveseat will use less floor space than a full size sofa, leaving additional room for other furniture, such as an end table.

Make Use of Your Wall Space

Living in a small space, it is important to utilize your wall space. Wall space provides storage shelving, as well as a great way to personalize your living room decoration. Wall decorations can be purchased at home stores, or you can even make your own. Photographs also make excellent wall decorations, and will truly make your space your own. Again, it is important to make sure that you have small apartment furniture in mind when you are shopping for wall decorations. Pick pieces that match, whether it be coordinated colors or a coordinated theme. Too many different types of decorations can make your small space feel cramped. Also, don’t overdo it. A couple of strategically placed wall decorations are enough; too much will make your small space feel smaller.

Choose Dual Purpose Furniture

Storage ottomans are a great small apartment furniture solution. Choosing pieces that serve multiple purposes will save you on floor space and storage space. Storage ottomans can be used as footrests, extra seating, a place to put cocktails at a party, and a place to store personal items. A coffee table with underneath storage is also a great small apartment furniture solution. Coffee tables can be purchased with pull out drawers, or a bottom tier. Place magazines or a fun coffee table book on top of the table, and store other items below.

Separate Your Space

If you live in a studio apartment, it is often difficult to create separate living room and bedroom areas. A small apartment furniture solution for this problem is the shoji screen. Shoji screens can be purchased at many online retailers and many furniture stores, and can go from simple to elaborate in decoration. Place the shoji screen in between your living room and bedroom areas, and you instantly create privacy.

Decorating your small space with small apartment furniture in mind may take a bit more effort than simply pulling things off the shelves, but the results will be worth it. If you do it right, you can make your small space actually seem larger.
