Storage in Your Laundry Space

Staff Writer · Jul 9, 2010

Lots of homes have some additional storage areas in a laundry space along with the washer and dryer. These closets, cabinets, shelves and other storage features can help families organize all of the stuff that they keep in their home. Some storage tips will help households figure out how to best use a laundry space.

What to Keep in a Laundry Storage Space

You might not think of the laundry room as the best place for storing hanging clothes, but if your laundry space includes full-length closet areas, this could be the best place for some of the garments that come directly out of the dryer. Having a hanging storage space right next to the dryer makes wrinkle free hanging easy.

Although you may want to keep some of your clothes in the laundry space, beware of keeping a lot of items in the storage spaces that would normally go in the bedroom. Keep in mind that to access these clothes and other items, you’ll need to always be running to the laundry room. It might be a better idea to keep tools and other items in the laundry that you would only access for working around the house.

Keeping Laundry Space Free

It’s also a good idea to save space for your actual laundry and laundry supplies. Packing a laundry storage space full of extra stuff might mean that your detergent and laundry baskets end up strewn across the floor. It can help to designate a special cabinet or space for all of the gear that you use to keep your clothes in good condition.

Access to Washer/Dryer Units

One common problem with laundry room storage spaces is when those who use them don’t think about keeping floor space clear or otherwise keeping easy access to the appliances. If something happens to your washer line, or you need to get into any electrical paneling or other “guts” of the house, you won’t want a lot of stored items in the way. This goes for any room in the house, but because there’s a major water line in to the washer, you’ll want to avoid keeping a lot of easily damaged paper goods and other stuff directly around the appliance, just in case there’s an unforeseen incident with the hot/cold line or any other infrastructure that usually gets built into a laundry space.

Bikes and Other Outside Equipment

A laundry space can also be a great place for some of the larger items that need to go outside periodically. The trick is to keep the space from getting so cluttered that you can’t move anything around. As with other spaces in the house, families will need to prioritize space and figure out alternative storage options if there is simply too much to pack into a house with a smaller floor plan.

Smart storage and organizing can really help households save time in everything that they do each day. Good storage solutions will also make a home look a lot nicer, and contribute to easy resale or other aspects affecting property values. For many families, neatness is more than just a habit, it’s a strategy that pays off over time. Think about how to best structure your home for easy storage.
