Television Buying Guide: How to Find Energy Efficient Sets

Staff Writer · Apr 4, 2011

A television buying guide can provide you with basic knowledge about the various types of televisions available in the market currently and can help find the right television for your lifestyle needs and one that’s energy efficient as well. It can also provide you with the latest reviews and ratings, the best pricing, and information on calibration and technology. Here is how to find energy efficient sets:

Step 1: Choose the Correct Type of Television

There are different types of televisions available in the market today and each type consumes different amounts of energy. A traditional cathode ray tube television uses much more energy than modern sets of the same size. Rear projection televisions use the least amount of energy followed by liquid crystal display televisions. Plasma models use three times the energy consumed by a rear projection television of the same size. A buying guide can help you decide which type suits your needs the most.

Step 2: Choose the Size of Your Television

The bigger the television set you opt for, the more money you will have to pay out to the electricity company.

Step 3: Look for the Energy Star Label

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy award an energy star label to products that are energy efficient. You should ensure that the set you wish to buy has such a label, as it would use 30 percent less energy than one that doesn’t have the label.

By referring to a television buying guide and doing some homework before buying a new television set, you can select one that is the correct type and size. It should also have an appropriate energy star label so that you know what to expect in terms of its energy consumption.
