The Costs of Moving: How Cost of Living Can Affect Your Lifestyle

Staff Writer · Mar 17, 2010

One of the costs of moving is becoming accustomed to a different lifestyle. Because lifestyle is contingent on the services and housing provided in a community, the way you’re used to living can change as a result of a move.

The Cost of Commuting

Depending on where you move and the transportation that is provided, commuting can make a significant impact on the amount you spend. If you commute privately, then you have to consider the costs of gasoline, repairs and insurance. If you move to a heavily populated area, many times insurance costs increase as well as the price of gasoline. Also, you have to take into consideration the number of miles you drive each day. If driving your car becomes too cost-prohibitive, do you have access to good public transportation? Needless to say, your daily transportation can play a major role in how you conduct your day-to-day life.

The Expense and Availability of Housing

Housing can also become a major issue after a move. Real estate taxes can influence the number of homeowners living in an area as well as rental rates. Also, if you live in an area that advocates rent stabilization or rent control, other apartments, not under these types of regulations, can be far higher than they normally would be in a free market.

Taxes

Along with real estate taxes, other taxes, such as sales and income taxes can have a bearing on your lifestyle once you’ve moved to a new place. Some states tax income while others do not. Also, some places impose a county tax on one’s earnings. How about sales taxes? They also can affect the way you live and what you can afford. Some states do not have a sales tax while other states have sales taxes that are high enough to restrict what you can buy. Also, some areas tax telephone usage, which can definitely affect the number of calls you can make socially and professionally.

Education and Daycare

The amount you spend on education and daycare in the place you move can also alter your situation. What type of education is offered and is daycare adequate? Both these offerings can greatly impact the way you raise your children and what you can afford.

The Costs of Clothing, Food and Leisure

The prices of clothing and food can differ from place to place too. Depending on the demographics, some area groceries and retailers offer fairly reasonable prices while more popular or densely populated areas typically have higher prices when it comes to food or clothing. Your lifestyle, after your move, can also be shaped by the number of places that offer leisure activities and entertainment. How many parks does the area you’re now living in have? How many movie theaters or restaurants are nearby? Is the cost for leisure activities expensive? You’ll soon find out, after you move, what the available entertainment is and the related costs.

Of course, the true cost of living can’t be fully felt until you’ve settled in your new apartment home for a while. Nevertheless, do your research before you move so you’ll know how to make the necessary budgetary adjustments when you get there.
