The Hidden Costs of Overseas Moving

Staff Writer · Mar 10, 2010

When it’s time for overseas moving, not everyone with an eye on exotic foreign destinations thinks about the total cost of getting all of their stuff over there along with them. The majority of us have quite a lot of personal belongings, much more than can be easily shipped overseas. Anyone who is going on a transatlantic flight or other international destination should think carefully about how much it will cost them in the long run. That’s not to say an affordable overseas move can’t be made, but it may involve scaling down all of the things you are planning to with you. Here are some of the hidden costs of these types of relocations.

Short-Term Necessities

Any time you pack up all of your things for an overseas move, there are items that won’t reach you right away, and some items that will never reach you at all. A big part of the initial cost of moving overseas is in picking up all of those small items that you weren’t able to bring along. Total up the cost of your initial buying spree when you reach your new home, and you’ll see how these kinds of costs contribute to a relocation.

Baggage Fees

That’s right, even though you paid good money for that airline ticket, it still doesn’t give you the green light to bring along a lot of extra gear for free. Frustrated customers are complaining about how airline baggage prices keep climbing, and climbing. If you’re taking the maximum baggage to accommodate an international move, be prepared to pay over $100 with some airlines.

The Things You Didn’t Bring

Along with all of those short-term necessities mentioned above, many find when they arrive at their new locations that they need at least some of the items they couldn’t fit into their suitcases. More importantly, as time goes on, expatriates overseas will tend to build up a new supply of personal belongings that they purchase one at a time for one purpose or another. For those who need all of the comforts of home anywhere they happen to be, this can get very expensive.

Inevitable Shipping Problems

Any time you contract with an outside moving company, there’s a risk that some items will be damaged or lost in transit. Insurance may cover the cost of this, but sentimental value and other factors can add to your real costs, and the time that you take replacing materials might be an additional liability. Even those who companies pay their costs of relocation can still encounter problems, especially if they did not read the fine print from their moving agreement.

All of these issues add up to a hefty bottom line for overseas moving, so unless your company is willing to pay for most of your expenses, or you like to travel light, take a good hard look at the financial picture before jetting off to parts unknown. A little adventure can be a good thing, but without the right attention to logistics, it can get pretty frustrating.
