The Importance of Dog Exercise for Stress-Free Apartment Life

Staff Writer · May 19, 2010

Daily dog exercise is an essential part of a happy, healthy dog’s life. Although it can be easy to put off taking the dog out for a walk or a game in the park during a hectic life—even more so if the weather is crummy or cold—it is essential that you establish an exercise routine for your dog’s sake as well as your own.

The Negative Effects of a Dog without Exercise

Although the amount and kind of daily activity may vary from breed to breed, it is a universal fact that dogs that don’t exercise regularly are more frequently restless, hyperactive, anxious, lethargic and depressed than dogs who have regular exercise. Lethargy and depression lowers the dog’s immune system and increases the dog’s chance of coming down with diseases and injuries, as their muscles are not regularly worked and can easily be strained.

Restlessness, hyperactivity and anxiety leads to poor behavior, such as non-stop whining, barking, digging, and scratching or knocking things over for attention. If you live in an apartment, the noise your restless dog makes could get you in trouble with the neighbors and the landlord. If your restless dog causes damage to the fixtures of the apartment, you’ll have to pay for the repair.

The Health Benefits of Daily Exercise

Giving your dog exercise daily will greatly reduce her risk for injuries and diseases, such as:

-Obesity
-Heart disease
-Bone and joint disorders
-Low muscle tone
-Digestive disorders
-Depression

Exercise will also allow your dog to sleep better, meaning that she won’t be awake at night making noise and causing destruction and she’ll also boost her immune system by getting a proper night’s sleep. As a whole, dog exercise allows your pet to live a much longer, healthier quality of life.

The Behavioral Benefits of Daily Exercise: A Bonding Opportunity

When your dog exercises, you’ll be right there with her, establishing a bond of trust. This is especially important for rescue dogs, shy dogs and dogs just recently adopted. These types of dogs in particular need to establish a bond with you in order to become a better-behaved pet.

Dogs who benefit from daily exercise are less likely to be aggressive and are more affectionate and loyal because they bond with you through walking together and playing games. Exercise gives your dog the ideal personality, making her a loving, loyal dog who isn’t aggressive toward other dogs and people whom she trusts.

More Activity for You

Part of the reason many people enjoy owning dogs is because they make great exercise partners. Because they need daily exercise, their owners get daily exercise, too. Taking your dog on a walk a couple of times a day or taking her out to the park to play fetch gets you moving and exercising each day as well. Coupled with a healthy diet, daily exercise with your dog can get you a better-toned body and give you similar health benefits as those your dog experiences.

The responsible pet owner knows that a daily dog exercise routine is simply a part of owning a dog. Once you’ve welcomed a dog into your life, you must give her adequate exercise each day to keep both your dog and yourself happy and healthy.
