The Pros and Cons of Hiring a Housekeeper

Staff Writer · Dec 16, 2009

If you are a busy person who works a lot, or just one that hates to clean, then you have probably consider hiring a housekeeper. Housekeepers can be highly beneficial in those types of situations; however it is important to thoroughly weigh out the pros and cons of hiring a housekeeper before you decide to do so.

Pro – Freeing Up Spare Time

The undeniable pro to having a housekeeper clean your house is that it frees up a lot of your time. If you spend a lot of late night hours at the office, it is probably fair to say that you feel more like sleeping than cleaning when you come home late at night.

The nice thing about having a housekeeper when you come home late is that the work is already done and you can simply kick back and enjoy yourself. You don’t have to worry about vacuuming the floors or dusting the living room because it has all already been done for you.

Pro – Avoiding the Cleaning Game

If you are a person who absolutely hates to clean, then hiring a housekeeper is probably something you have been considering. Chances are that because you hate to clean, you only do it when it is absolutely necessary. That basically means that you only clean when you are forced to because either guests are coming over, or that your house has turned into such a mess that you can’t even navigate your way through the living room.

The real benefit of having a housekeeper is that you no longer have to worry about cleaning in a crunch, or that you have to be embarrassed when the in-laws unexpectedly drop by for a visit. The entire house is clean and you didn’t even have to lift a finger to do it.

Con – Affording a Housekeeper

One of the most important things that you will have to consider about hiring a housekeeper is whether or not you can afford it. There are obviously some nice benefits that come along with having a housekeeper; however, there is also an associated cost.

Most housekeepers can be hired for anywhere from $50 per week to $350 per week. The rate of a housekeeper is related to many factors, such as the area in which you live, the experience of the housekeeper, how many days per week you require the assistance of a housekeeper and what type of tasks you expect from the housekeeper.

Before you decide to hire anyone, you should always consider dollar value. You may want to do some research and compare prospective employees before you make your decision. If you are going to shell out some money for things to be taken care of around your home, then you certainly expect the job to be done accurately and timely. If not, it is a true waste of money.

On the other hand, if you are struggling to make ends meet and you simply despise the task of cleaning, hiring a housekeeper may not be the best option for you. Housekeepers do not work on IOUs and will rightfully expect to be compensated at the end of their work week. If you need to keep that money in your pocket for other things, then you may have to forgo the idea of hiring a housekeeper.
