Tips for Finding Affordable Movers

Staff Writer · Dec 29, 2009

When households are looking at any kind of relocation, they may be desperate to find the most affordable movers to help them get to where they need to be. Finding good professional moving help at affordable prices is key for profiting from a move that takes your family across town or to the other end of the country (or beyond). There are some general ways for a family to get a better shot at finding cheap movers in their area. Here are some tips for locating affordable moving companies for either a long or short trip.

Find Flat Rate Movers

Some of the most expensive moving companies around may hide behind a cheap “basic rate”. Then, later, when you’re in the middle of a move, you get an invoice hiked a good bit and filled with all kinds of extras. For the best chance at affordability, figure out your overall total cost up front.

Price Shop Locally and Online

An online search can get you a collection of quick moving quotes to work from, to see how national companies stack up. Also call around locally to get some good local quotes.

Be Specific about Your Move

Another way to get good rates for a move is to target companies specializing in certain distances. For city movers, look locally, as the local places have much more knowledge of your urban area that can save you money. For international moves, look for companies that are good at cutting cost out of shipping items overseas or around the country. Rather than just calling a shop and telling them you want to go X miles, look at which businesses are cut out for dealing with your specific distance move.

Seek Out Companies with a Frugal Target Market

Some local moving companies may advertise “for students” or some kind of similar advertising. You can often see that these places are able to offer low rates to appeal to a customer base that may have less disposable income to spend on a move. These companies can be a good resource for finding low cost moving deals.

Look for Small Movers

What many moving experts will tell you is that the larger the firm is, the more they tend to build into their costs. On the other hand, going smaller often puts customers in touch with someone whose low overhead allows them to offer spectacular rates. They may not have advertising, but a local two or three person crew operating on their own can be a way to get great discount rates on a city move. Just be sure that in their rush to provide cheaper movers, these crews are not compromising the professionalism you get from larger companies with a reputation on the line, including skilled packing, damage control for your possessions, and more.

All of the above guidelines can help in locating companies who can move your household right without charging you top dollar for it. Time and effort is important in locating the best moving options to successfully relocate for a job or other reasons.
