Wall Clocks as an Interior Design Element

Staff Writer · Oct 22, 2010

Wall clocks are an often overlooked design element. Easy to hang on the wall, available in an array of sizes and neutral wood or vibrant colors, a wall clock can be a fun and functional decorating tool. There are a few considerations to include in your choice and placement of a wall clock.

Consider the Room

A wall clock will not be overlooked. Because of this, you must carefully take into account the appropriate size, color and placement of the clock. If the room is already colorfully or fully decorated, a neutrally stained wood clock can make a great addition to open wall space. However, if the room is neutral, a colored, antique or otherwise decorated clock will be eye-catching and add depth to the room. Do not use a brightly contrasting clock to the room, or the clock will seem garish.

Consider the Clock

Antique, painted or wood? What clock do you like best? Do you want the clock to serve as a timepiece as well as decoration? Also, if you do not already have the clock, how much are you willing to spend? Measure the space intended for the clock to determine the clock’s maximum dimensions.

Shop Away

When shopping for a clock, begin your search online or in a home decorating store. Do not be frustrated if you do not find the perfect clock in your initial search. While not an unusual decorating item, because of their size and visibility, the clock you choose should be perfect for the space. You may find that you discover the ideal clock when you least expect it, possibly when you are not even searching.

One May Not Be Enough

A great decorating idea is to use multiple wall clocks. Whether similar in decorating tone, or a set of unique clocks, a grouping may be a great way to create a one-of-a-kind presentation. This idea, too, may make shopping easier as you will not have to find a single, perfect clock. Possible combinations are one large clock in the center and several smaller clocks hung surrounding the larger one, similarly colored clocks hung randomly or different, uncommon clocks hung together. In the last scheme, you may be surprised at how the dissimilarity among the clocks creates a cohesive display.

If you have a long, narrow space, you might also consider putting several clocks in a row and setting them to the major world time zones. Beneath each clock, place a label or plaque indicating which city’s time it displays. Placing a photo taken in the clock’s designated city is a great way for travelers to show off the many places they have been.

Hang It Right

When hanging your clock, use the proper hanging tools. A heavier clock may need a stud for its hook, while smaller clocks may not. Hang the clock at the average height of the person in your household so it is easily viewable. Hanging it too high or low will make it seem as though the clock was an afterthought in the room.

Being creative and having fun with wall clocks is the number one rule when using them for decorating. Whether you choose to make them the room’s centerpiece or as a way to commemorate travels, wall clocks can be employed for many different displays and are a great way to show off your decorating sense and style.
