What to Consider Before Doing an Online Apartment Search

Staff Writer · Jul 23, 2010

When conducting any online apartment search, you need to determine what type of apartment you want to lease, the price you want to pay, the location of the community, the amenities and the length of the lease.

Apartment Type

Before you begin browsing on the Internet for your dream apartment, think about the types of apartments you like. Do you want a modern floor plan? Or would you rather find a city apartment in a rehabbed building? Do you want to be a suburbanite or are you better suited to urban living? How many bedrooms and bathrooms do your require? Do you want a studio or do you need a good deal of room in order to be happy?

Price of Apartment

Of course, price will play a major role in your decision. By zeroing in on a specific price, you’ll be better able to find an apartment you like that also meets you budget. If you need more room in which to live and you’re single, you may want to consider seeking a roommate to cut costs. Think about the overall price and what type of living arrangement works best for you.

Narrowing down a Location that is Right for You

Location, too, is always a determining factor in where you choose to live. If you’re new to a city or are not sure exactly about where you fit, you can conduct a search for apartment homes and review the descriptions of individual communities. Are you a homebody? Do you appreciate older style buildings? Maybe you like to go out in the evenings. Does the community have plenty of nighttime entertainment or restaurants? Think of what a particular area has to offer. Does it have a lot a crime? This is also a consideration. You might find what you think is an ideal apartment, but if it is in a neighborhood that doesn’t fit you, then it might not be so ideal. Therefore, check out the communities of the city where you’re looking for an apartment. That way you can narrow down your search considerably.

Amenities

Take a moment to consider some of the possible features and amenities of the properties you’ll be reviewing. Do you want a fireplace? Is it essential that you have a carport? How about pets? Do you need to live in a community that is pet-friendly? You may also want to live somewhere that offers a playground for the kids. Or, you may need one that is close to public transportation. Other community and apartment features may be important to you as well, such as in-unit washers and dryers, fireplaces, a fitness facility, pool, tennis court, window treatments or central AC. Think about the features before pointing your browser randomly toward any apartment’s site.

Length of Lease

Also, before you conduct an online apartment search, you’ll need to think of the lease terms. Do you want a 6-month or one-year lease? Perhaps, you want to find an apartment that allows you to pay on a month-to-month basis. Think about the lease terms before you do any apartment search on the Internet.

Keep the foregoing information in mind before you go online. That way, you’ll be able to select an apartment with a little bit more of an idea of what you really want.
