How does roommate matching work?
  1. Create a profile: Create a profile that includes information about yourself, such as your age, occupation, and living preferences. Be honest and thorough when completing your profile, as this will help you find a good match.

  2. Set your preferences: Specify the type of roommate you are looking for, such as their age, occupation, and living preferences.

  3. Create your listing: Use My Listings page to create a detailed description of your living situation. Include information such as the location of the home, the size and layout of the available room, rent and utilities costs, and any other details that may be relevant to potential roommates.

  4. Add photos: Include photos of the available room and the rest of the home to give potential roommates a sense of what they can expect.

  5. Search for potential roommates: Use our search function to specify criteria such as location, price range, and shared interests. You can also use our messaging feature to get to know potential roommates before deciding to move in together.

  6. Meet potential roommates: It's a good idea to meet potential roommates in person before deciding to move in together.

  7. Make a decision: Once you've found a potential roommate that you feel comfortable living with, discuss details such as rent and household responsibilities and make arrangements to move in together.

  8. Remember to be cautious when finding a roommate online, as you will be sharing a living space with this person and it's important to choose someone you can trust.
What guidelines should I follow to find a roommate?
Finding a roommate online can be a great way to save money and make new friends, but it's important to follow the proper procedures to ensure a successful living arrangement. One of the most important steps is to follow the application process and rental criteria set by the apartment community. This typically involves filling out an application, providing references, and passing a credit and background check but can vary by community. Once you've been approved by the apartment community, work with the property manager to establish a lease agreement that outlines the terms of your tenancy and any shared responsibilities with your roommate. Throughout your time living together, comply by your community’s rules and regulations, be respectful of the property and your neighbors, and communicate clearly and openly with your roommate to avoid any misunderstandings or conflicts.

All information, conversations, and roommate/renting procedures are done privately between users. ApartmentRatings does not verify each listing and we highly encourage all users to read our Safety Guidelines below as well as Terms & Conditions before listing a room or responding to a listing.
How do I spot and avoid scammers?
Here are some guidelines to help users spot and avoid scammers on a roommate-matching website:

  1. Be cautious of requests for personal information: Scammers may ask for sensitive information such as your social security number, bank account details, or passport or driver's license identification information. Do not provide any sensitive personal information to the person. Contact the community to submit an application according to the community guidelines.

  2. Watch out for unrealistic offers: If a potential roommate is offering a rent price that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true and do your own research to verify the legitimacy of the offer.

  3. Look for red flags in communication: Scammers may use poor grammar or spelling in their communications, or may be evasive or refuse to answer certain questions. If something seems suspicious about the way someone is communicating with you, be cautious.

  4. Don't wire money or send prepaid debit cards: Scammers may ask you to wire money or send prepaid debit cards as a deposit or to pay rent. Do not provide any money to a person without confirming the approval of your application and money owed from the community leasing office.

  5. Use a secure payment method: If you do decide to pay rent or a deposit, use a secure payment method such as a credit card or check. Avoid using cash or wire transfers, as these methods are not traceable and can be difficult to recover if you are scammed.

  6. Use common sense: Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Be cautious and use common sense to protect yourself from scammers.

Can any ApartmentRatings user contact me?
If you are posting a roommate listing on ApartmentRatings.com, it's possible that potential roommates may try to contact you through an anonymous email service. This means that they would use a service that allows them to send an email without revealing their personal email address or identity.

To contact you through an anonymous email service, potential roommates would follow these steps:

  1. Potential roommates will browse through the listings on ApartmentRatings and find your listing.

  2. They will click on your listing to view more information and see a form with a "Send Message" option.

  3. They will complete the form to introduce themselves and click "Send Message," which will send you an anonymous email from them.

  4. You can then respond to their email to continue the conversation if you are interested in discussing further (at this point, you will be emailing them from your personal email address and they will be able to see it).

It's important to be aware that anonymous emails can be less reliable and may be more likely to be spam or scams. If you receive an anonymous email inquiring about your roommate listing, be cautious and use your best judgment before responding. You may want to do some research on the anonymous email service being used to ensure it is legitimate and not a scam. The best method to ensure quality responses and attract the right roommate(s) for you is to make sure your listing includes detailed information about the available room and any requirements and/or preferences for renting the room.
