Resident 2009

12/2/2009

Rental term: August 1 2009 - August 1 2010. Base rent $610/month, with $50/month cat rent for our two cats. The layout of our one bedroom apartment is great! The bedroom and living room are spacious, and the kitchen and dining area are a decent size. The bathroom is a bit small, but not bad (the litter box fits in there, and that was our biggest concern). Also, the double-paned window in the bedroom blocks all outdoor sounds when it's closed. I love that thing! The public areas are well-maintained on the property as far as I can tell. Since we moved here in August the front hall smelled of smoke or mildew, but they replaced the carpets a month ago, and that took care of the smell. When we've had to call maintenance they come out within the same day (or first thing the next) and usually get the problems fixed. I think they've hired new and better office staff since the other reviews because the ladies in there have been nice to us. It's great that they will hold packages in the office that won't fit in the mail box, too! Certain sounds such as the child next door screaming or the neighbor upstairs walking around or pounding on something (not going to check - that's the stuff horror films are made of) can be heard through the walls and ceiling. Normal conversations, music and t.v. at a reasonable volume, and the such do not seem to carry through at all. We have an apartment by the stairs and one of the exit doors on the ground floor. The sounds of people using the stairs and the doors carry through the walls big time right into our bedroom. Be wary if the person showing the apartment insists that the sound doesn't carry through the walls. It really does! Also, when people smoke by those doors if you have your bedroom window open the smell will come into the bedroom. Some people here don't like having secure entries, because a few times per month we'll find someone's jammed a coin into the bolts in the door or propped the door open. I mention this because having those secure entrances and privacy measures in place was one of the main things that made me want to live here, and it's frustrating to me to deal with this issue. Be prepared to call a few times and wait a couple days for someone to come around and fix the door. Laundry facility is lacking. There is one washer and dryer for each floor. Dryers on two of the three floors don't work, and that's if you are lucky enough to find the laundry room not being used already. Not worth $1 to dry, and then another $1 to dry each load - my partner and I take our laundry over to her mother's and get less hassle. I hope this was enough detail. I'm sure it's overkill - but it's definitely the kind of review I wish I saw when looking for an apartment earlier this year. I hope it helps someone else.
