Gateway at Knoxville

At first I thought Gateway would be a good bargain and a great, yet cheap option for student housing. However, they don't respect roommate pairing requests. Not a crisis, but when you've promised, that's a big deal. Also, they've changed the website. It used to be very different, but none of the photos are even close to reality. Ask to see an actual apartment, nothing like the model. False advertising abounds, which isn't uncommon, but they advertise gated community, yet refuse to use the gate. As a result, safety is miserable. Three times this year we got notices about gun-shots in the complex. Parties rage all night and pot can be smelled everywhere. The grounds are filthy. The grass is covered in dog crap and the speed bumps will hurt your car. Don't expect good maintenance. When it snowed, cars were trapped for three days because no brine was bought. Also, the sidewalks weren't cared for, despite being told they were and it was very hazardous. The staff is unhelpful and unprofessional, which is probably why they come and go so quickly. They do very little between years. When I moved in, the carpet was still dirty (had popcorn kernels on it.) Also, they don't replace the carpet, they just layer new stuff on the old stuff. Sure, it's soft, but it can destroy your allergies as beneath your feet is a solid three inches of layered filth. I graduated this year, but I certainly wouldn't have lived here again, even as a student. For about $15 more a month, you can get a great place elsewhere. The price may seem appealing, but gateway is a very poor decision.
