Resident 2010 - 2014

7/9/2014

My first complaint arose before I'd even moved in - I signed the lease for one particular apartment which they confirmed would be my apartment, but when I got there to move in (and after I had change of address cards mailed to friends/family, I might add), they told me that apartment was no longer available. They then moved me into a different apartment. I moved in the middle of summer, and after getting all my things into the apartment the Friday evening I moved in, I went to take a shower - but the shower was stopped up and hardly drained making it impossible to shower. The staff said this wasn't an emergency (even though this was the only shower in the apartment) and said I would have to wait until Monday for the maintenance to take a look at it. They were not sympathetic and gave the impression that they could care less. The apartment itself was fairly nice, though it was a bit dark inside and the carpet had pet stains that became visible after I'd been in the apartment for less than a week (I have no pets). From time to time the smell of cigarette smoke and weed wafted into my apartment, but the staff wasn't much help when I brought it to their attention. The lights outside in the apartment breezeway were painted over and never fixed, despite my placing multiple maintenance requests; this made the breezeways dark and appear run-down. There was rarely enough hot water to take decently long shower, despite my reporting this to maintenance and the supposed adjustments they made on the hot water tank. If 2 people wanted to shower, there was no chance that you would both have hot water. The front door to my apartment was very drafty and light was visible around the door from the large cracks. Maintenance did little to address this despite my complaint; ultimately this increased my electric bill. The apartment was definitely not energy efficient, and there was a significant temperature difference in rooms when you got close to the windows. There is an extremely high turnover rate with the staff - in the 4 years I was there, the staff changed many times and none of the staff from 4 years ago are there now. With that said, the staff is a definite negative for the complex. Staff was not accommodating to the tenants, and you get conflicting answers to the same question depending on who you talk to. As other reviewers have stated, the staff is frequently not available even during their posted business hours. Lease rates went up significantly with each new lease I signed. The gate at the entrance to the complex was often broken (more than half of the time). The pool frequently opened later in the season and closed fairly early each night. When it snowed/iced the sidewalks weren't ever scraped or salted and were quite slick in certain spots (I fell more than once). For a while there were people running a business as personal trainers out of the apartment complex gym (this was a direct violation to the terms of the lease and also resulted in less room and less equipment for paying renters), but the apartment manager didn't seem to care when I brought it to her attention and said there wasn't anything she could do. When I moved out I was initially told that a walk-through inspection could occur at any point on the day I was moving out, however, when speaking with another employee later, I was told that they could only complete the walk-through after every item was out of the apartment. I called to schedule the walk-through and was told that I needed to schedule it several hours in advance "to give maintenance a chance to finish what they were doing so they could meet me for the walk-through." I waited around in an empty apartment for about 45 minutes until they came to complete the walk-through, but maintenance was nowhere in sight. Instead, a lady from the office came by herself to do the walk-through (the same lady who told me hours earlier on the phone that she had to wait for maintenance to be able to come). She turned on all the lights and turned the blinds (one set never worked properly), and then said the stove drip pans needed replacing. There was nothing wrong with the drip pans, just normal wear on a circa-1980 stove, but she said the drip pans "have to look like new" and stated I needed to replace them or I would be charged.
