Resident 2008 - 2009

8/31/2009

So there's this guy that lives in an apartment near mine. His name is Catman. At least that's how he introduced himself to me, as well as what all my neighbors call him. He was friendly enough, and still is. Noticing I was hauling in pieces of furniture when I first moved in, he kindly made the effort to greet me. His apartment door is always open. He has some of his own cats, though it's hard to say which of the regulars are his. I often see random neighborhood cats going in and out of his door. He also dumps a mound of cat food on his back patio every evening around sunset. This food attracts more cats as well as countless noisy pigeons and grackles and, recently, a fresh new family of ten (10!) raccoons. I hope the owners of pets and parents of small children in the Willows community know that there is an army of feral cats and domesticated and fearless raccoons on patrol every night. Is Rainier Management prepared to offer rabies shots one day? Unfortunately, his apartment smells like stale beer, cat urine, and what must be years of accumulated grime (that door is ALWAYS open). While I have nothing against Catman, as a neighbor or as a person, even with his habitual semi-nudity, I do have a problem with the odors that permeate my own apartment on 100 degree days. I often have to close my windows and use my A.C., just to escape the smell. But the smell is only part of the problem. Catman is not a well man, and he is an old man that doesn't seem to receive much support. I can't speak for his condition, but I'm willing to cut him some slack for it. His roommate, however, is a degenerate. It's the summer. I want to sit on my back patio and read a book with a glass of lemonade. I'd like to think part of my exorbitant rent goes toward this privilege, as that modest patio was a serious attraction when I was considering moving here over a year ago. However, not a single day goes by where I don't have to close my door to get away from Catman's roommate (I'll call him RM) shouting into his phone, sounding like a drunk, redneck Harvey Fierstein (look him up), swearing a blue streak and threatening some new target (the phone company, the dmv, his bank, the government, family members) that if they don't give him the money or services he thinks he deserves, he's going to call his lawyer. This morning I heard him pop open 4 beer cans out there before 10a.m., and have a 2 hour yelling match about about overdraft fees. The first time, months ago, it was hilarious. Then, as I couldn't help but overhear more and more of his personal life shouted for all to hear, it became sad. Now it's just annoying, and I've spoken to several neighbors who agree and have also spoken to management. Nothing done. People stop enjoying their patios and go inside, like roaches when the lights come on (and yes, I'm using a roach comparison for a good reason), whenever RM comes out to have a chat on his phone. I think he thinks his phone only works outdoors. Even residents of the adjacent apartment community, maybe 30 yards away through a wooded area, shut their windows because of him. A few people have complained about cockroaches at the Willows on this site, maybe if management took a good look at the waste and food scraps, both human and cat-made, around Catman's apartment, they might find the source of those bugs. Do I blame Rainier Management for my unfortunate luck in neighbors? No, of course not. Catman and RM are clearly unique cases, and someone in an apartment at the Willows far from mine may have lovely neighbors whose apartments smell like cookies. I do blame Rainier Management for high rent prices in an outdated building (the location only goes so far). I blame them for not notifying residents when construction will be occurring at or near their windows (smaller, yet still noisy, jobs, like the power tools above me right this moment - they do notify if the construction affects the whole building/community). I blame them for the showers that go from icy to volcanic, and I know I'm not alone on that one. I blame them for ripping off pet-owners (I'm not one, but would be if the fees weren't so steep). Most of all, I blame them for ignoring the legitimate complaints of its residents. Can't wait until my lease is up. p.s. I'd like to add I don't blame the maintenance staff, themselves. They're obviously asked to do a lot of superficial work to keep them busy and apartment-seekers from walking away, and aren't allowed to focus on the concerns of current residents. Just doing their jobs. However, the aforementioned power tools and hammers have returned this morning with no prior notice from management. No note. Too much to ask?
