Resident 2011 - 2013

8/24/2013

I have lived at the Camden Ridgecrest property for 2 years now. My experience has been mixed. I'll start with the negatives. By far, my biggest frustration has been the rent increases. Two lease renewals later, my rent is $200 more a month than it was when I moved in. Adding to my frustration is the fact that I have no choice to opt out of the $53/month TWC cable package or the $30/month valet service (which is unnecessary since I live close to a dumpster). Now, the apartment was a good deal when I moved in. But with the rent increases, I am increasingly aware that my unit is simply not worth the money. My apartment has ugly carpet and there is incredibly cheap laminate in the bathroom and kitchen; the laminate is supposed to look like wood, but looks almost comically artificial. The laminate countertops are rough and never feel clean, even after scrubbing. Plus, they look cheap, especially when I can see a visible crease jutting upward at one corner. The cabinets are horrid; the edges are not even sanded smooth. I know they are now renovating apartments as they come available, but it is not stopping them from charging me the same exorbitant rate for an un-renovated unit. The quality of the neighborhood has also gone down over the past couple years that I've lived here. I've seen police cars and emergency medical vehicles more and more. In terms of safety, I really only felt unsafe one evening when neighbors in my building were screaming obscenities and threatening one another. That said, there have been some positives worth mentioning. The complex is incredibly dog friendly, which for me is a plus. Also, the maintenance team has been great; they always respond promptly and resolve issues within a business day or two (I've only had a handful over the past 2 years). The office staff has also always been friendly towards me. Also, my apartment does include a stackable washer/dryer, which has been convenient for me. So, can I recommend living here? If your options are limited and you don't mind paying high rent, despite living far up North in Austin, then this place might be a good choice for you, especially since you'd likely get a newly renovated unit that, while maybe not great, is not as bad as mine. If you don't want to spend over $1,000/month for a 1BR for which, in a year's time, will almost guaranteed be $1,100/month, you might want to look at other options. Don't forget about calculating that mandatory TWC cable and valet waste pickup in your monthly bill; the initial price they quote you will likely not include the extra $80 you'll be paying for all that. As with anything else, your milage may vary.
