Lesson reinforced: You get what you pay for.

I'm paying $630.00 / mo for a 1br 650 or so sq ft. Given the going rate in Austin I don't really feel so bad about it.

The interiors of the units I've seen are very white-wall generic 1980's apartment. The fixtures are dated, the floors slant in places and stress cracks can be seen on the load-bearing beam that runs across the top of the living room. (Obviously you don't see this in the demo units)

The closet is the high point of the unit - it's very generous. The external storage area on the deck is nice in that you don't have to leave your area to access your belongings.

There's a nice park that backs up to the property.

The location of this complex is fantastic - right on MoPac. The complex is bordered on all sides by either the Time Warner buildings or the park so there are none of the noises sometimes associated with multi-family housing. The place is reasonably isolated so there's not much traffic from non-resident passers by. There is one apartment complex across Duval and the rest of the area is either single family residences or business parks.

The washer and dryer are included which is nice. That's about where the good points end.

My entire building vibrates when trains pass.

I had to caulk my bedroom window my second day here because there was wind blowing in hard enough to move the hair on my arm and make all manner of whistling noises.

I could not get Direct TV because I don't have Southern exposure in my unit. So be it. Forced into Time Warner! The TW installation tech advised that the wiring in the building is so old that most of the taps don't work. So if I want cable in my bedroom I'll have to split it myself off of the line that he ran in from the side of the building. He rigged up a "T" connector to give me cable and internet and the cable runs in plain sight along the baseboard. All in all it's not bad with throw rugs, etc but it is an example of one of the drawbacks of living in an older complex.

The Leasing Office staff is minimally professional at best. They are distant and standoffish and absolutely take no ownership of any level of problem. The manager is either not there or with someone else. The maintenance staff is stretched and/or understaffed.

If Sadia Maharaj is around you'd do well to ask for her. She is far and away the most professional of the leasing officers.

---Update: There is no emergency plan for the cold weather. All the stairs are iced over - particularly for those climbing from the 2nd to the 3rd story. No sanding of steps, walkways, or parking lots was evident. I bought some sand and spread it on the steps near my unit but would have felt better knowing that there was a comprehensive safety plan in place.
