Resident 2012

7/27/2012

I'm finally moving out of my apartment here on Tuesday, which I've been eagerly awaiting and counting down to for the last 3 months of my 6-month lease. I honestly don't even know where to begin with this complex. Let's start with the apartments themselves. First of all, any apartment complex will have a certain amount of noise from neighboring units, that just comes from living right next to/below other people, which I completely understand. Noise, I can deal with. But the units here may be the most poorly insulated I've ever experienced. You can literally hear everything from the apartments above you, including your neighbors just walking across the living room. If I'm in my bathroom while my upstairs neighbors are in theirs, I can hear them using the toilet. And if there's ever any stomping or someone drops something, it sounds like they're about to come crashing through my ceiling. Then there's the issue of updates to these old apartments. This complex has been around since the 70's, and throughout four decades and countless managment staff, some of which resigned or were replaced halfway through apartment remodels/landscaping, pretty much every unit here is a little different. This is not a good thing. Since there is no pricing system for the different units (everything has the same flat-rate rent) you may end up paying the same rent as a fully upgraded unit, while yours still has decades old appliances and dirty, musty carpets (like mine). The faux wood floor in my kitchen even changes to a different material halfway through. The old tiny fridge has two shelves and no ice maker. The dishwasher takes an hour and a half to do a load of dishes and makes more noise in the process than a freight train. My dishwasher even fell out from beneath the countertop (literally just fell forward) while I was loading it one time. There also is no microwave, and very limited counter and cabinet space in the cramped kitchen. There are no ceiling fixtures in the bedrooms or living room. There are however wall switches by the doors of the bedrooms, but these connect to one of the outlets in the room so you can turn on a lamp with it. Which outlet is connected? Who knows. You just have to plug a lamp into every outlet and use process of elimination to find out which outlet is connected to the wall switch. I tried all the ones in my bedroom but none seemed to work, so I had to use the bathroom light to illuminate my room, or stumble through the dark to turn on a lamp. Also, don't ever try to take a shower at the same time as others in your home, or really have any sort of running water going simultaneously. Half of the time I'm in my shower the water pressure will almost completely die to the point where all I can do is stand there, naked and cold, and wait for the pressure to return while a tiny bit of water drips from the shower head. This also happens while doing the dishes. One thing I did like about the apartments was the nicely landscaped courtyard areas outside the apartments. My square had nice trees, a bench, and a bbq grill right outside my door. However, all the squares look different, so some are nicer than others, while some are not landscaped whatsoever. Also, this layout, (complex is divided up into squares of 16 units, 4 in each building which form the edges of the square) doesn't really allow for any privacy from your neighbors. Everyone's front doors face one another's, which isn't bad if you have friendly neighbors, which seems isn't often the case in this complex. The couple in the unit above and adjacent to mine are constantly fighting with each other with their windows open while their young son screams and cries, and one time the hot headed guy came out and was in such a rage he tried to fight me and some of my friends for absolutely no reason. Things like that seem to be the norm rather than the exception here. The copmplex is nicely lit and landscaped as I said, but if part of feeling safe for you is living near friendly, classy neighbors, look elsewhere. Then, there is the apartment management. Pat is the ONLY manager on duty at any time. This means if you try to go by the office when he's decided to take one of his MANY daily breaks/complex walkthroughs, you won't be able to talk to him until later. And if you're like me and work 9-5, giving me a limited window of when I can go by the office, this can become very frustrating. I had to go by the office 9-10 times earlier this month attempting to give my 30-day notice and talk to the staff about a late charge that was applied towards me because the day the rent was due, the banks were closed, meaning I couldn't go get a certified check like I usually pay my rent with, so I dropped it off first thing the next day, which apparently was not good enough. When I finally managed to go by when someone was there, it was a girl I'd never met before. She told me Pat had left for 2 months to get knee surgery, and she was filling in. Because of this, the office hours had greatly changed, but these changes were not reflected in the hours listed on the office door. They were no longer open on Saturdays (which is when I tried to go up there about 6 of the 10 times, due to my workweek schedule), when they were usually open from 8am-3pm. The girl (Niki) used this as an excuse to say the office was not at fault for me not being able to get the 30-day notice form, and said they may not accept my NOW late notice. They eventually did, but would not back down from the late fees, as I didn't have "a very good reason" and "should've had the money earlier," but I cannot change the dates of my paychecks. Pat didn't notify any of the tenants of these changes in office staff. Things like this seemed to happen every SINGLE time I had to deal with the office. Pat is never there when you need him, but he and his single maintenance man will leave endless notices outside your door (or inside, whenever they feel like popping in) for minor infractions. I was once cleaning my apartment, and I filled up a trash bag so I set it out of the way outside my door. It was there for about 30-45 minutes while I finished cleaning, and then I took it with the rest of the trash bags so I only had to make one trip to the dumpster. The next day, there was a notice on my door asking me to keep trash off of the porch and to "please remove these items today to avoid a lease violation." Attached was a blurry picture of a black blob on my porch. Which had literally been there for no more than 45 minutes, the previous day! They've also recently been posting notices about arbitrary things like turning down your music as you drive through the property, and to not dare replacing their ugly blinds with other fixtures, or you'll be in violation of your lease and subject to ridiculous fines. These are things I've seen much nicer, luxury apartment communities do to upkeep their appearance, which makes total sense. But this complex, the cheapest in town, with all the above listed apartment and landscaping issues throughout, has no right to badger it's tenants like this for such minor things. I could go on but most people hopefully have already stopped reading and ruled this apartment community out. Yes, it is certainly cheaper than any other apartment you'll find in the Cedar Park area, but I would strongly advise you to look at other cheap apartments and compare them to these, and you'll see that $50-$100 more per month for an apartment elsewhere is very worth it. Try Middlebrook Gardens, one street over on Cypress Creek. Similar prices, but much newer and nicer. I strongly believe people should speak up when they have an exceptional experience somewhere, and vice versa with poor experiences. I've tried to be objective in my judgment of this place, bu the headaches are simply never ending. Do NOT make the mistake of leasing here. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
