Resident 2003 - 2007

3/17/2007

We have lived here for nearly four and are preparing to move out in about a week. In December, I encountered something that I had never encountered before. My underwear were stolen from the community dryer. Every building has there own, so I thought we were limited as to who may have stolen them. I told the then manager, Irene, about the situation and she thought it was funny and said that she would send flyers threatening eviction to whoever is doing this. The flyers never went out and thank goodness because I saw the rough draft and it was highly innappropriate. All the staff knew of my situation and kidded with me about it. I wasnt' as concerned at first because I didn't know if it was just some random act. Well, a little over a month ago, it happened again. It was a Sunday, so I made a police report and I called the Autumn Sunrise exchange to leave a message with the manager. NO ONE called me back. When I called the new manager the following morning, I let her know what had happened and she told me that two other women had their underwear stolen in a week and a half time. Why wasn't anyone notified of this. To make matters worse, I had a good idea who did it. And when I voiced this concern to her, the other women had pointed out this tenant as well. A few days later, my husband saw the suspected tenant rummaging through someone elses dryer. Since he did not know at the time if it was that person's, he didn't say anything to him, but immediately called the landlord who did NOTHING. I started telling my neighbors because I was feeling very unsafe by then and the next day one of my neighbors came over to let us know that their peephole had been removed by someone. Meaning that whoever did it could now look in. The last encounter I had involved me coming home and coming face to face with the suspected tenant. He gave me an ugly look and walked towards his apartment which is downstairs from mine. When I reached my apartment building, he was standing outside of his door as is waiting for me to pass. He watched me go up my stairs and I had never felt so scared. I grabbed a few items and left. I armed myself with a weapon because I felt that threatened. He was gone, though. I made a second report with the CCPD and contacted the manager again. She said they found women's underwear in a dumpster and a traffic citation with them with the suspected tenant's name on it. But she didn't think this proved anything, so she left it there. I was so mad. She didn't evict him, but decided not to renew their lease which is up at the end of March. He lives with his mother, but is supposedly banned from this complex. I still feel unsafe because there is no way of telling whether or not he is on the premises. I don't stay here alone and I don't advise other women to stay here alone either. I am taking this matter up with the Corpus Christi Apartment Association.
