Resident 2014

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE PRETTY LAKE! Ever heard the old saying Painting the Pig ? It describes this place to perfection. Yes, the grounds are maintained very well but that is about where it stops and you will not be living outside. The buildings are over 30 years old and they look it. There are problems with the electrical wiring, you can hear right through the walls, and the floors really creek. Also do not even dare to use your fireplace. By all accounts, they have not been inspected or cleaned in years. So the big draw for this place is the lake and jogging trail. You do not need to live at The Lakes to use this trail and hundreds of people use it every day who do not live at The Lakes or The Village; thus you get hundreds of random people running past your place every day. You will see them with their dogs too but at the Lakes, you yourself cannot have an animal. As for maintenance, I will give props that they are really quick to fix things if they break. The problem is that they do not do any preventative maintenance and so you will be making a maintenance call probably at least once a month. When people move out, which is also very often, they do come in and clean the carpets, put another layer of paint on the walls (mine are so thick parts have actually fallen off in chunks), and will sometimes replace the cheap vinyl floor with a cheaper vinyl floor but that is about where the cleaning stops (see below). They are NOT fast with these changes and so you will be hearing the renovations for days through the very thin walls. As for my apartment, which was NOT the one I was told I was getting when I signed the lease, it reeked for weeks after I moved in. The shower was mildewed and they had not even cleaned out the drawers from when the previous tenant skipped out (I prefer to buy my own Band-aids and razors thank you). Unfortunately, I was forced to sign the lease before I could see the apartment because they claim, which is total bunk, that they cannot show an occupied apartment. After a while of smelling all sorts of odd things and pot smoke, I figured out that my apartment and another apartment shared a dryer vent allowing whatever was in their air, to be in mine. Healthy right! If you are seeking peace and quite, forget it! You will be lucky to sleep past 6:30 am on any given day. Between the trash collections, ground keepers and the close proximity of the parking lots, there is always some noise going on outside. Couple this with rude neighbors going up and down the loosely connected stairs and you can kiss sleeping in on your day off good bye. On the topic of trash, there are not enough dumpsters at most of the buildings and so you will get to see overflowing garbage on a daily basis. On the topic of your neighbors, they are not going to be the cool people Lincoln Properties would like you to think. The Lakes is really a low income property and the people who live here are pretty much that. As it seems they have finally figured out they cannot charge the high rents for this place any longer, the quality of residents has also gone down fast. There are A LOT of children here along with a lot of people (-----------------------) cramming into one bedroom apartments. You have to be especially careful because there seems to be a large population of families of a ------------------- all living in small apartments and while the parents are at work, the grandparents let the kids run wild. If you manage to get out of the parking lot without running over one, you did well! On that note, do not plan on using the jogging trail any time before 3:00 in the afternoon because these families congregate on the trail and fitness stations and will not get out of the way. Ok, almost done. The Village itself is just not cool anymore. They promote the legend but that was in 1990. When I moved to Dallas, I made the mistake of buying into this idea and clearly regret my decision. Today, The Village is a rundown mass apartment community that cannot hold a candle to the modern apartments in Dallas. The people who hang out at the Country Club have been there since 1990 and are the perfect example of alcoholics who cannot accept their youth has passed them by. If you can afford to live in one of the new communities between Southwestern and Northwest Highway, you will have a much more modern experience but then why would you want to pay $2000 a month to live at Northwest Highway and Skillman!?!?! Heed my words: DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE PRETTY LAKE!
