Resident 2013 - 2015

4/7/2015

After countless unanswered emails by management, we as residents had to resort to organizing a resident meeting on June 18, 2014, to discuss and compile our concerns regarding the place we call home. Safety and health concerns in the building were of great importance to many residents, as well as the rising cost of living versus the deteriorating quality of the building and its amenities. Management was invited to attend and contribute to the discussion, but they failed to make any appearance. Nearly 30 other SSOL residents did attend to partake in a healthy, productive meeting. After weeks of being ignored, we finally sent out a group email to all participating residents as well as management, which included our meeting notes, concerns, suggestions, etc. The collective response from residents was overwhelmingly positive, but what we received from Mr. Bill Burk, the new property manager was, this form of correspondence is "simply inappropriate". In no way does Mr. Burk seemed concerned about the residents. Some of the issues we had were: dog feces throughout and surrounding the building, non-residents wandering the halls, skyrocketing cost of rent and most importantly maintaining the sense of community that we originally fell in love with. Mr. Burk stated that our concerns and recommendations were, "simply not suitable for a large rental community". One has to ask themselves, since when does asking people to clean up after their pets or preventing drug deals downstairs at the bar from happening while resident's children are sleeping upstairs, not seem suitable topics of concern to any community? Mr. Burk clearly stated that, "management and ownership will not respond directly" to the residents of South Side on Lamar, and that management will continue to "make unilateral decisions" that are going to impact residents. Because many residents do not agree with what Mr. Burk has to say, we were told, "you as the consumer have the option to decide if the product fits your lifestyle on a contract to contract basis". Mr. Burk makes it brazenly clear that his number one objective is to: "improve its financial performance, and provide a return to the investors", which comes at the cost of tearing apart a community of residents who've grown to live and work together. Before considering moving here, you may want to ask yourself, do you want to pay top dollar to live in a neighborhood where the sense of community is ignored and disrespected? Do you want to live in a building where the health and safety of you and your children could potentially be compromised due to management's unwillingness to act? These are all questions you must ask yourself before signing the lease. If you record a meeting or post anything on Facebook about SSOL, your lease will be terminated!
