Resident 2010 - 2014

7/2/2014

As a resident of the South Side for 4 years now I have to admit that I'm rather confused about recent happenings in the building that I've come to know and love. The South Side is a unique place full of artists of various genres, business owners, and regular families. The family feel of the building is what has kept me here despite a massive rent increase every year. The staff is wonderful and I feel like I've come to know many of them as friends. In the past few months this changed in what seems like overnight. Now there are meetings being held and decisions being made about my home that I personally was not a part of. I'm not sure what all of the madness is about but one thing that I know for sure is that what I loved most about this building, the community feel of the building, is slowly fading. All of a sudden the staff seems reluctant and afraid to talk and now this just seems to be "where I lay my head". The pool is closed all summer. I get it. The roof needed to be fixed. But just LAST summer the pool was shut down for most of the summer for the same reason. Couldn't we have fixed the roof area in winter/fall months? That seems more logical to me. Although I am a business owner, I do not run a business out of the South Side and I rather enjoyed the tables where business and fellow neighbors could share anything from their empanada business to yoga classes. Honestly it was something to pass the time as you wait for the elevators which may or may not all be functional from day to day. I wish the tables would come back. What I do NOT wish for is the junk that would accumulate on the floors next to the tables from tenants moving out. Our courtesy staff is amazing and I've never had a problem with any maintenance requests being answered in a timely manner. I've heard rumors that certain residents had meetings with the new management (who I wouldn't know if he walked right up to me), and he made changes based on their opinions. It would have been nice to include other long time residents like myself but the invitation was never publicly extended. I love South Side, I feel safe and it's a fun place but honestly with all of the changes I know now that I will not be renewing my lease. I hope that the "unhappy meeting people" find a resolution with management because I honestly know how they must feel. I'm just too strapped for cash and looking at the possibility of a further rate increase with a loss of major selling points amenity wise (Whatever happened to our business center with multiple computers instead of the single one that you have to wait to use now?) to stay and fight.
