Soldiers at FT. HOOD - Renters Beware!
The apartment was overpriced and SMALL. The gate that was broken in 2003 is still broken. They put a temp code on it which every pizza guy in town knew. They kept promising to fix within a month. The exercise machine didn't have any cables on it and so was useless.
Parking is absurd. You get one assigned space and its location has nothing to do with where your apt is. Ours was 2 buildings down and around a corner.
Noise was a real problem. We could hear the upstairs neighbor's todler walking and their TV/Stereo.
When it came time to deploy to Iraq, they tried to prevent us from ending the lease under the standard Military clause and also the SSCRA and tried to force my wife to remain in the apartment - rather than with family - with threats of thousands of dollars in fees, and having a broken lease slapped on our credit report. The III Corps JAG and our Senator's office had to get invovled to straighten them out. The only way we were able to end our lease was to get III Corps to threaten to place them on the Ft. Hood "black list" and so be off limits to military personnel. Looks like they should have been put on it based on the other soldier reviews here since 2004.
The "business center" had 2 computers that were always unavailable and were exceedingly slow.
My wife was ill one night and threw up on the carpet in the bedroom - the management tried to make us recarpet the entire apartment instead of just re-coloring the one room.
It took management a very long time to send us our deposit after we left.
It was a difficult situation (read FUBAR!), more so as I was leaving for Iraq. I strongly caution any soldier from considering renting here. I'd rather live in the barracks.
