Resident 2006 - 2012

7/19/2012

I lived at Cottages for 5 years. I'll do a pros & cons list for you. PROS: 1) I would recommend it if you're looking to avoid a fully carpeted apartment (they offer laminate flooring on the first floor units). 2) I only say I recommend it because the units are updated (new appliances), clean, & spacious for an apartment. 3) The maintenance men are very good at what they do & they're polite, not always prompt on general requests but prompt if there is an emergency. 4) They keep the swimming pool very clean 5) You can reserve the clubhouse after office hours for get-togethers or parties. There is a pool table & TV's. 6) With every year I lived there, if I transferred into a bigger unit I bartered my rent lower than asking price. If you're a good clean tenant who negotiates well, they will work with you. CONS: 1) It's not an attractive complex, (could probably use re-painting or updating on the outside) & the landscaping is a bit bare. 2) People rarely pick up their dog's poop, but after years of me complaining, they have installed more poop bag dispensers & signs stating to pick up after your dog. It has helped somewhat, but they don't, or can't enforce the rules anymore than that. 3) Walls are thin (like at any other apartment complex). You hear the upstairs neighbors walking around, talking etc. more than you hear the neighbors beside you. 4) The management & staff has a high turn over rate. I have found that this is typical of the business though. 5) With every service request I had to put in writing to not enter my unit unless I answered & they would forget, or not tell the maintenance men my request. It was a great frustration of mine. It was very intrusive & very disrespectful on their part. 6) The dumpster area is embarrassingly over filled & somewhat neglected. I lived in a unit near the dumpster & was embarrassed to have company because people would dump nasty mattresses, trash & furniture all over the area & sometimes the complex would leave it for days without cleaning it up. The office would request that people not dump furniture but they do not or can not enforce that. 7) I lived in the back of the complex for 3 years, where they would sometimes place a large dumpster as an extra dump spot. They would leave it there for weeks and weeks, attracting flies, over filled, and right out my window smelling like a landfill. I finally requested they move it, but they didn't. That may have been a temporary problem, but it does speak of their somewhat lax attitude toward their tenants at times. No apartment complex is perfect. The actual units were well maintained, clean, and affordable for me at the time I needed it. Hopefully you found my pros & cons list helpful.
