This past year I lived in apartment 2V, a three bedroom two bathroom layout with two other girls. We attended the nearby university, so New England Village was a great location since it was so close by. Our apartment layout was decent - a good deal for college students on a budget. However, proximity to school and cheap rent are the extent of the positive things I have to say about New England Village.
While my roommates and I were gone over winter break, rats moved in to our apartment. We came back to an apartment that had been ransacked. Chewed up carpet, destruction of personal belongings, and rat droppings everywhere. The rats were living in the attic space above our apartment and coming in during the night hours. We continued to deal with this problem for the rest of our time living in the apartment. Management was extremely unhelpful. They initially responded by cleaning and patching the carpet and setting some traps. Over the next few months we killed 21 rats with these traps. It was clearly a problem that needed more attention than a few traps, but management refused to do more. At several points when we demanded they either have a professional come out or relocate us to a different apartment, they pretended to be unaware that we had a rat infestation in the first place.
Besides the rat infestation, we had other smaller issues with management. They kept changing their email address, making it difficult for us to ensure they were getting our maintenance requests. If we wanted anything to get fixed, we had to call and email them multiple times. We also had problems with our air conditioning, as it broke down at the very least five times during the hotter months.
Overall, living in this apartment was a traumatic experience. One night I woke up to the sound of a rat gnawing at my bedroom door trying to get in, and all of us came across bodies of dead rats in the apartment at some time or another. We felt uncomfortable in our own apartment. Living at New England Village might be worth it if nothing goes wrong during your stay there. However, I wouldn't recommend taking that risk.
