Resident 2011 - 2012

3/1/2012

My husband and I moved in to Windgate when we got married in August. I read multiple negative reviews online and was nervous about what I saw, but we tried it out anyway. After living here for 7 months, we've already set up another place to live as soon as we're out of the lease, if not a few weeks before. It's a nice place to live short-term, especially if you move into a one-bedroom apartment, but I would never live hear long-term. Here's what to expect if you move in: -We end up paying about $850 after rent and utilities (FYI, our rent is $709-not even slightly worth the cost) so expect to pay a lot more than they quote you. They will add in as many fees as they can, so watch out for that, too. -Sometimes parking is limited and people have to park on the street, so try to get home earlier in the evening, especially on snow days. -Windgate claims to be a non-smoking community, but all of the residents facing west cannot open their windows because the smokers hang out next to the fence and the smell carries all the way to our doors. It's disgusting, but management won't do anything about it. -My husband and I rarely hear our neighbors inside the apartments, except the occasional feet pounding of our neighbor above us. We've struggled sharing the stairs with her because she carries a metal cart everywhere and occasionally pulls up the rusty nails on each step when she drags it down the stairs. It's pretty noisy and kind of dangerous, but we stay on top of it so we don't step on the rusty nails. (Don't even bother with maintenance) -Some nutjob drives an excessively noisy truck and does not come in until one or two in the morning, so we wake up to that every few nights a week. The driver insists on leaving his engine on for a few minutes after he parks. It's genuinely inconsiderate. -We have a few neighbors who like to stand outside in the parking lot and talk loudly in the middle of the night. Perhaps they are the obnoxious smokers, but that keeps us awake at night, too. -Lastly, the apartments aren't terribly run-down, but don't expect new appliances. Our sinks look like they were old in the 70's and my oven could be sold online as an antique. You have a dishwasher, but Windgate doesn't have any water softeners, so if you have nice dishes and silverware, be sure to wash each cycle with Lemon Shine. It will prevent the hard water buildup from collecting on your dishes as quickly. I won't say that I don't recommend moving in here because I'm starting to believe that apartment complexes just attract obnoxious people and you'll probably find it everywhere. Just don't move in expecting to live in a pleasant and tight-knit community that you'll want to stay in forever. You'll just be disappointed. Also, if you do move in, don't look across the street at the new apartments- it's depressing.
